In reply to Lesley McDougall. Yes! I think a lot of you journalism background will transfer well to copywriting. Technology is great but there is nothing that can replace a phone call or face to face conversation.

Thanks for putting this out there. I am just getting started as a freelancer so I don’t know “the rules” yet when it comes to approaching clients, but this makes total sense. I have some previous journalism experience and it’s the same premise If you question someone on paper, you are not going to get those golden nugget moments where you can pick up on the full story. After all, the name of the call is “discovery”- when you talk in person, someone is likely going to share details you would not otherwise get through a static questionnaire, and this can lead to other great insights or lines of questioning. Conversation = connection!

It wouldn't necessarily make you redundant since answering the questions is just step one (and they'd still have to write the copy!), but it certainly would make them question why they're hiring you to do a job if they're the ones having to do work! By ask these questions and and getting the information you need on a quick call, you alleviate the burden on the client to figure this all out. Thanks for reading and commenting! :)

I’m just thinking basic here…if a client could, would, or have the time to write out the questionnaire…wouldn’t that make me…the copywriter…look possibly redundant?

I was in the middle of a call w/a prospective client when this hit the inbox! I did ask a lot of these questions over the phone. Talking with them is so efficient and I can draw them out so much more vs. on a form—plus it establishes rapport.

You definitely get a better understanding of your clients from a zoom call. You can pick up on their body language and verbal cues.

I also ask if they have certain products or services that they want to showcase or promote more than others.

Also which companies/brands do they admire? And conversely, which companies/brands do they dislike?
