Hi! That’s a great question. Here’s a link to a blog post and YouTube link that covers just this!

I understand that your rate will differ based on your experience level and your location. But I still don’t know what my baseline should be. I’ve heard you say to be leery about using the “averages” for any job because of all the varying factors. So how and where do I start setting my rate?

Hi Ashley,

You charge for the hours you actually work. So, you’d take note of any time you spend on the phone with the client, the time you spend concerting (brainstorming), the time you spend writing, the time you spend editing, etc. You don’t charge for the time you spend waiting to get feedback since you’re not actually working during that time – does that make sense? Then, at the end of the project or at an agreed-upon time (at the end of every month, for example) you’d bill your client for that time.

Also, since I know you’re a member of the Comprehensive Copywriting Academy (welcome!) I really encourage you to join our members-only Facebook group. This would also be the perfect kind of question to ask in there! 🙂

Thanks for commenting!
Nicki

How exactly do I clock the hours in if I’m charging by the hour? For instance, say a client provides me with a small project to work on. Do the clocking start as soon as I begin? If the person I’m doing the copy for wants revisions, but takes some time sending me feedback, is that time also included?
