Accurately estimating how long tasks will take is SUCH a good reminder, Trish. I tend to grossly underestimate, too, so I always add an addition 30 minutes to an hour or two (depending on the type of task). It’s a lot less stressful that way! I also always give myself a couple of days buffer between when I schedule myself to finish an assignment and when I tell the client I can deliver it.

The Pomodoro technique is a great one! For others that don’t know about it, one of our Comprehensive Copywriting Academy students, CCA Next Level members, and overall copywriter extraordinaire Kate Kosydar wrote a piece on it on our blog: https://filthyrichwriter.com/staying-productive-when-unmotivated-pomodoro/

Thanks for sharing such thoughtful insights, Trish!

Next thing I know, I’m several episodes into a season of some new series [facepalm]. So I NEED to schedule my time if I want to get done what’s important to me.

One key to time blocking is learning to accurately estimate how long a tasks will take. I tend to grossly underestimate. So I find it helps to add buffer time between tasks.

A tactic that really helps me to lock in during my time block is using the Pomodoro technique— especially when I feel distractible. When I tell myself I only have to focus for 25 minutes, then I can do X for 5 minutes, this ‘usually’ is enough incentive for me to pause my squirrel moments and take care of business. And it becomes easier to stick to my schedule.

Great reminder, that freedom (and actual productivity) comes from proper constraints.

Thanks!
Trish

This is a tool I absolutely want to try! I even have the perfect app for it! I am (or was) getting my degree online and it was ultra-challenging when I started working a 9-5, and taking care of my home, (which means taking care of my fiancé, he’s such a baby sometimes!) But when I had those big blocks of time I was killing it at school and didn’t fall into the pattern of “Netflix in PJs” all day..

The app is called 24me if you want to take a look and it’s awesome. I totally utilized it to get me through school.

Cheers to ultra-scheduling!!! (Non-alcoholic of course, today is a work day!)

Ethlyn

In the summer, I wrote up a schedule on a scrap of paper. Listing what I’d be doing with every hour. But I haven’t actually tried it. And I’d spent the last 3 days going through the 1100 emails in my primary inbox – That doesn’t even include all the folders my subscriptions are being filtered to. So I know what you mean by wasting time clicking on emails from e-tailers. I need to unsubscribe to everything! All the podcast conference, stock trading gurus, podcast teachers, singles travel planners, local creative workshop events… I’ll never become a famous comedian if I’m spending all my time reading and sorting through emails from them. So I’m unsubscribing as I go through them. But I should also be blocking time to do interviews with people over Skype for my YouTube channel. I don’t have to do JUST email purging each day.

Hi Abigail,

I just use iCal, but Google calendar would work just as well. Keep it easy and cheap! 🙂
