Hi Gina,

I know: It’s always tough. And resumes are especially tough to say no to because you don’t want to feel like you’re not helping someone advance their career, right? But your response was right and your husband’s assessment was right. Even if he didn’t ask for the quote but he still seems to want your help, I’d just send a quote along! That way he absolutely knows that if he wants your help, he’s going to have to pay for it. (More likely, though, I’m going to guess that he’ll get the quote and just stop emailing you about his resume…)

You have to be fiercely protective with your time. Sometimes you’ll want to do favors for friends and that’s fine, but when you don’t, you have to lay down the law. Just because someone wants something from you doesn’t mean he’s going to get it! 🙂

Thanks for commenting!
Nicki

I consulted your site last night and found it very insightful. I have been a professional copywriter and translator for over 25 years and saying no just doesn’t get easier. A friends asked last night that I translate his résumé this weekend, it’s a rush job, as it always is! I proposed doing the final proofread on both the presentation letter and résumé (for free). He came back with wanting me to do the translation; that’s when I tactfully reiterated my offer and indicated that I would gladly submit a quote for the professional fees for the translation mandate. He wrote me this morning saying he understands I don’t work for free, but still, his communications never indicated that he was requesting a quote for the work; which to me implies he wanted me to do it gratis. Dealing with friends and family is never easy to me because there is a highly-charged emotional aspect to this relationship. My husband told “If people have the nerve to ask you to work for free, you should have the nerve, and right, to refuse politely.”
