Pitching is the only way to truly control your copywriting business’ success. But when it comes to sitting down to actually do it, our brains love to come up with all kinds of reasons *not* to hit “send”. “Oh, that company is waaay too big to pitch, they would never need my help!” or, at the other end of the spectrum, “A solopreneur? They’d never be able to afford a copywriter!”

In this episode, Nicki and Kate remind us that when you hold back on sending out pitches, you’re actually doing a major disservice to everyone out there who needs you (companies big AND small). Listen in now to learn why these pitching assumptions could be costing you opportunities (and money!).

A Sneak Peek at the Episode

[2:09] One of the biggest assumptions that people make when it comes to pitching is avoiding sending pitches to chain companies and franchises, thinking they’re too unwieldy.

[6:20] Don’t worry too much about finding the exact contact you need to send your pitch to. When you create a fantastic, value-based pitch, there’s a very good chance it will be forwarded to the right person.

[8:38] There’s no harm in sending multiple pitches to the same company (especially bigger ones) if you know there are specific arms of the business that you could pitch different ideas to.

[9:20] People often assume bigger companies already have copywriters in place. But a lot of the time, they want additional support as people rotate in and out due to vacations, maternity leave, etc. or if they need help beyond their day-to-day operations.

[11:30] Don’t assume small businesses or solopreneurs don’t need copywriters—many are happy to invest in copywriters as it takes work off their plate and helps them make more money.

[13:17] There’s no downside to pitching. Any assumptions you make or resistance are just your comfort zone talking. If you have a valuable idea for a company, you don’t need to wait for a ‘perfect’ time to pitch them—just do it anyway!

[14:39] Don’t overthink it when it comes to the right time of year, day, or time to send a pitch—just sending your pitches and follow-ups consistently throughout the year is what matters most.

[17:42] Another assumption that will cost you is not pitching agencies or assuming that because a company is so big, they only work with an agency, and therefore you shouldn’t pitch them. You can pitch both the in-house and the agency.

[19:20] When people are doing research, they often assume that if a company’s website looks perfect, they don’t need any copywriting support. But you never know what projects they’re working on internally and when you pitch, you’re simply offering an idea to get your foot in the door.

[23:04] You’re not psychic, so there’s no point in trying to guess a company’s needs. There is *every* reason to send a pitch and even if it’s a “no” right now, it could still leave the door open for future possibilities!

Must-Hear Takeaways

As with every episode, we highly encourage you to listen to the entire conversation! But here are a few of the highlights:

Nicki and Kate, hosts of the Build Your Copywriting Business podcast, sit next to each other on a couch laughing with notebooks in their laps.

“Is a company too big? Is it too unwieldy to pitch? The answer is absolutely not. Often, the bigger a company, the more opportunities there are within that company.” – Nicki

“People are taking maternity leaves, people are taking vacations, people are taking sabbatical and so even if you’re feeling like, ‘Well, they already have a full team”, a lot of these places want
additional, backup help. People are rotating in and out all the time. They might keep your pitch for when they do need someone.” – Kate

“Don’t make assumptions about companies being too small to need a copywriter. There are plenty of solopreneurs who are already making money and there are also plenty of solopreneurs who understand that you have to invest in a business and are willing to hire a copywriter to help them start making money.” – Nicki

“There’s absolutely no downside to pitching. Absolutely none. And any of these assumptions are just your
resistance popping up trying to keep you in your comfort zone.” – Nicki

“Put together a really fantastic pitch and send it to someone who is most likely the right contact but don’t worry if they’re not the exact right contact because when you put together a really helpful, useful pitch, there’s a very good chance that they’re just going to forward it to the right person.” – Nicki

Here, we find out why that's so common and the secrets to successful goal-setting.

The arrival of a new year often sparks an enthusiasm that makes us set wildly ambitious resolutions. Shed 60 lbs? On it. Become fluent in French? Let’s go. And then would you believe it, a few weeks down the line, you’re done. One of the biggest reasons why resolutions are set up for failure is because we never stop to break it down into smaller steps.

While we absolutely encourage you to have goals or resolutions (which, by the way, don’t have to start on January 1st!), we also need to make sure we take the *right* approach. In this episode, Nicki and Kate break down how to make our goals more effective, more fulfilling, and more fun!

A Sneak Peek at the Episode

[1:45] People often set a resolution in January, work on it for a couple of weeks, and then give up. But that doesn’t mean we failed, it means we need to reevaluate it. Was the goal too big?

[5:55] To make any meaningful progress on a goal, you have to break it down into smaller steps.  While it’s great to have overarching goals, you need a plan to get there—otherwise it’s just too overwhelming.

[8:32] If you want to achieve a goal, you have to consider what habits you can set up that will make it effectively inevitable for you to get to that end result.

[10:16] You don’t always need to put a hard and fast number on things—giving yourself a range to work toward can be more motivating and avoid feelings of “failure”. For example, if sending five pitches a week is your goal, you might aim to send between three and six pitches a week.

[11:06] If you don’t have that deeper essence of why this goal matters, it’s going to be really hard to get yourself to take these actions.

[12:30] You will find it a lot easier to achieve your goals if you find some way to make them enjoyable.

[14:11] Your resolutions don’t have to be huge, overarching goals. When they’re smaller and more manageable, you’re more likely to do them and feel the benefits of accomplishment.

[15:07] Our hosts suggest their first idea for a resolution: not settling for a crummy job. That doesn’t have to mean that you switch jobs this year—it could just mean you start exploring your options. If you’re already copywriting, it could mean re-evaluating the clients you’re working with.

[16:49] There are lots of different milestones that fall under the general goal of becoming a copywriter. For example, sending out your first pitch, building your portfolio, or telling people you are becoming a copywriter.

[22:47] A lot of new copywriters fall into the trap of wanting to learn everything there is to know, not just about copywriting, but about marketing as a whole. But you’re going to slow yourself down immensely if you try to take on every other career possible within marketing.

[24:27] Feeling like you need to learn everything is a form of resistance kicking up. If someone’s hiring you to be a copywriter, you’re not expected to know anything outside of that.

[26:27] Kate shares that one of her resolutions for this year is to ask for help when needed. It’s important to get comfortable with the feeling of *not* knowing something and that it’s perfectly fine to reach out to people (or other resources) for help.

[29:57] Now is a good time to either go back and relook at the resolutions you set, or maybe set a new resolution. Look for ways to make progress and build habits that will make that progress inevitable (but also fun along the way!).

Must-Hear Takeaways

As with every episode, we highly encourage you to listen to the entire conversation! But here are a few of the highlights:

Nicki Krawczyk and Kate Sitarz, hosts of the Build Your Copywriting Business podcast, hold mugs that say "Filthy Rich Writer" as they sit side-by-side in front of a couch

“Overall what we would encourage you to do is figure out what direction you want to head and then figure out how you can get there, how you can make it as enjoyable as possible, and how you can make it as fulfilling as possible. And yes, fulfillment comes from doing things outside of your comfort zone so it’s not going to be—and it shouldn’t be— easy because we feel better about when we accomplish things that stretched us a little bit.” – Nicki

“My resolution is to ask for help when I need it. And I think this plays into feeling like we have to be everything for everyone. And we are so afraid to say, ‘I don’t know’, or to ask for help from someone who’s actually an expert in whatever it is that we need help in, or maybe we just want to learn, but we can also ask someone to help teach us.” – Kate

“What’s on your to do list for this next month or this next quarter or this next week? What do you have built out? But look for ways to make steps forward and move forward, because if we’re just staying in one place we’ll never going to get to our goals. So look for ways to make progress but also look for habits you can make that will make that progress inevitable, and look for ways to make those habits or make those steps fun, and celebrate them!” – Nicki

“The other thing to consider when setting resolutions and I’m going to continue to use pitching as an example, is not necessarily putting a hard and fast number on things but to give yourself a range to say, okay, if sending five pitches a week is roughly your goal, maybe you say, okay, I’m going to try to send between three and six pitches a week. And you give yourself kind of a more of a range so that if you’re not hitting that exact number, you’re also not beating yourself up and you’re saying, ‘No, I’m within the range that I want to be in. Yay!’ I think that can be a lot more motivating than not setting a really high goal and then not achieving it.” – Kate

Whenever we embark on something new, it can be tempting to go out and buy allll the new accessories to help you get started. “But a shiny, new desk will make me *feel* professional…and THEN I can do the work, right?!” Well, we hate to break it to you but…a new desk is *not* going to magically boost your productivity.

In fact, the “urge to splurge” is often just resistance showing up and trying to distract us from doing the work we need to do. So in this episode, Nicki and Kate remind us of the absolute essentials to kickstart your copywriting career, as well as the “nice-to-haves” that might come further down the line (when you have regular income coming in!).

A Sneak Peek at the Episode

[1:50] It’s easy to get excited about new endeavors, and then immediately go out and purchase all of the various accessories to go with that hobby. To help you avoid getting carried away, Nicki and Kate are digging into what you do and don’t need when it comes to your copywriting career.

[3:01] For starters, you need (reliable!) internet and a computer of some kind, whether it’s a laptop or desktop.

[4:50] You’ll also need some kind of automated backup for your computer (the joys of tech!) and some kind of word processing software, like Google Docs or Microsoft Word.

[6:32] There are all kinds of things you *could* purchase, but are not necessary. It’s very easy to start investing in software, for example, but make sure the software is going to pay for itself (and then some!) before you start investing in it.

[7:56] A few of the software that we’re big fans of include DubSado (for client tracking and invoicing) and Asana (for project management).

[9:23] As a copywriter, you need a space that you can work in (and actually get work done), and a space where you can go and take video calls or phone calls as needed.

[12:37] Even though we’re working from home, we want to come across as professional as we can. But that doesn’t mean you need to spend loads of money on a fancy office background—a blur is totally fine.

[15:05] Remember you also need to look professional on client calls—not necessarily a full suit but you don’t want to look like you just rolled out of bed!

[17:15] It’s worth considering how to make your workspace more ergonomic, whether that’s investing in a better office chair or wrist pad, to help with posture and comfort.

[19:10] Of course, there are additional items you can buy yourself like a new desk or lamps, but don’t buy that stuff before you have client income coming in.

[22:22] The temptation is to buy additional home office equipment first, thinking that it’s going to make you feel more professional so that you’ll take action. But that is 100% resistance showing up. In reality, there are very few purchases that you have to make to start copywriting.

[25:03] If you’re a CCA student, upload a photo of your home office to the Facebook group—it’s always fun to get inspired by other people’s home office setups!

“Frankly, you could do your whole copywriting career from a library which has free internet, which has computers that you can borrow, which has all of those things. You wouldn’t even need to buy anything. A lot of libraries have rooms that you can go to and shut the door for calls. So there are ways to make this work without spending anything really.” – Kate

“The magic to get you to do things is not going to be coming from making a purchase. It’s just not. It’s going to be from learning your motivation types, making commitments, reaching out for support from fellow students in the group, putting it on your schedule. All that kind of stuff is not going to come from stuff. However, go ahead and get the stuff once you are earning.” – Nicki

“Office decor, that kind of thing, it is not an investment. It’s a purchase. And it’s totally fine to make that purchase. But our strong advice to you is don’t make that purchase before you’re making the income that will help you pay for that purchase.” – Nicki

“There are all kinds of things that you could purchase, but they’re not necessary. Our students know that when we talk about software, for example, make sure that the software is going to pay for itself and then some before you start investing it. Because it’s very easy to start investing in software and a lot of them have monthly payment program and all of a sudden, at the end of the year, you can look at what you spend and go, “Oh my gosh, I’ve spent hundreds, if not thousands of dollars on software that I don’t really use or that isn’t really making any kind of positive impact on my business.” – Nicki

Here's what they wish they knew when they started!

The post Top Advice for New Copywriters (From Working Copywriters) appeared first on Filthy Rich Writer.

Copywriting is *so* much more than just words on a page. At its core, it’s about connecting people with the right solutions for their needs and wants, using messaging that truly resonates with them. (You’re basically playing Cupid—but with words instead of arrows!)

And sure, there’s no denying that writing killer copy takes skill. But remember that no one is born knowing how to write copy—even the highest-paid copywriting maestros had to start somewhere. We all learned how to do it, and with these expert tips from working copywriters, you can, too!

1. Know Your Audience

When people think about what copywriting is, they often have this perception that it’s all about creating catchy taglines and witty wordplay. But if your words don’t speak to your target audience, then it really doesn’t matter how clever your copy is. To master effective copywriting, you have to tap into what makes a specific audience tick before you even consider sitting down to write.

Why would the reader be interested in this piece? What problems are you helping them solve? And how are you going to creatively present a solution to that daily headache they’re grappling with?

Spending some serious time putting yourself in your customer’s shoes will help you tailor your message to speak directly to them. It will help you use the same language that they use and highlight the benefits that are most significant to them.

With a good grasp of their pain points and motivations, you increase the chances that they will take the action you want them to take, whether that’s making a purchase, scheduling a call, or something else entirely.

2. Write with a Clear Purpose in Mind

We just touched on the importance of inciting readers to take the next step (whatever that may be)—but let’s not forget that is the essence of all copywriting.

So, before you even think about crafting your first sentence, make sure you are clear about what action you want your readers to take as a result of reading your copy. Do you want them to subscribe to a newsletter? Download a podcast episode? Whatever it is, your writing should be focused around that single goal.

For example, say your client has asked you to write a social media post. Is your goal to boost engagement by getting more comments on the post? Is it to increase reach by getting more shares? There are many types of social posts and each type has a specific goal.

Once you are clear on the objective, make sure you write to achieve that objective, leaving out any potential distractions.

3. Focus on the End Benefit

When it comes down to it, consumers are, by nature, pretty egotistical. They don’t really care about a certain business or brand—they care about how it benefits them. The moment a business stops providing value, customers won’t hesitate to leave. Pretty brutal, huh?

That’s why it is so crucial for any copywriter to understand the difference between features and benefits. One of the rookie mistakes when it comes to writing copy, is focusing too much on the “what” and the “how” (think lists of product features, technical specifications, etc.). But the key to creating persuasive copy is actually in the “why”.

And to effectively dig into the “why”, you have to get inside your customer’s head. What’s really keeping them up at night? What would make their life easier, happier, and more fulfilling?

For example, I highly doubt someone would be fretting at night about the ins and outs of a money management tool. But they *are* going to be kept awake by anxieties around debts, money troubles, or not being able to save for the future.

Writing about the benefit is *the* most important tactic for crafting copy that converts. So once you’ve identified the key benefits for a particular audience, strive to always highlight them where you can—put them in your subject lines, headlines, and make them the first thing the reader sees.

4. Imperfect Action is Better than Perfect Inaction

When you’re just starting out, it can sometimes feel like every other copywriter has it all together. That can often make your inner critic rear its head, causing a lot of resistance when it comes to actually sitting down to write.

Our brains don’t need much of an excuse to procrastinate, especially when we’re faced with a challenge. And with a whole world of distractions waiting at your fingertips, it’s easy to get sucked in. But if you want to set yourself up for success, one of our top pieces of advice for copywriters is to just get that first draft down!

And let’s be clear here: the first draft is by no means going to be the polished masterpiece you send off to the client (more on that in tip 7). Think of it more as a brain dump, where you get the chance to get all your thoughts out of your head and onto a document—just like chatting with a friend to brainstorm ideas.

Embracing this mindset can help you dive into the writing process without getting bogged down by perfectionism (aka staring at a blank screen for hours).

It’s always a good idea to schedule out a time in your calendar (ideally at the time you feel most productive) to make sure you actually do this important first step. Because remember, getting started is often the hardest part—once you’re in the flow, the magic will follow!

5. Keep it Simple

It’s crazy how much information our poor little brains are expected to process. The average American is exposed to something like 4,000 and 10,000 marketing messages every single day

That’s why, for the majority of copy, you’ll want to aim for easy and simple language.  We don’t want to make our readers work too hard when they’re sifting through that much information on a daily basis!

When you first start out copywriting, there’s certainly a temptation to jazz up a piece of writing with long, fancy words. But in reality, that could be a surefire way to lose your audience’s interest, or—even worse—make them look for the information elsewhere. Our job isn’t to add unnecessary fluff, it’s to maximize the number of people who will read, absorb, and act on your words.

If you’re worried you’re overcomplicating things a bit too much, the Hemingway App is a great tool also great to make sure you’re writing as fluently, precisely and concisely as possible. It’s great for checking passive and active voice, the use of adverbs, and it also offers ‘simpler’ forms of phrases and words.

6. Break the Rules!

This one is definitely the most fun tip…mainly because it appeals to my rebellious side. But yes, as copywriters, we get to break the rules!! (Woohoo!)

Remember all those rules that were drilled into you in English class? All those things you were told that constitutes “good” writing? Well, I hate to break it to you but when it comes to copywriting, they’re usually not that helpful.

Good copywriting is like good driving—you shouldn’t notice it. When your writing draws attention to itself, it takes attention away from the message underlying the words. And the whole point of copywriting is to communicate a message.

Of course, it’s still writing, so the usual rules of writing apply. But it’s also about having a conversation with the reader, which means communicating in a way that reflects how people speak and makes it effortless to read.

To keep the conversation flowing, sometimes that means breaking the rules a little. So yes, you *can* start sentences with “and”, ‘but”, or “because”. (Seriously, someone even made a website to end this debate for good!)

7. Self-Editing is a Must

Remember we told you copywriting was not just about throwing words onto a page? Well, part of that is also because a large chunk of copywriting is actually editing. And we don’t just mean looking for typos and grammatical errors (although that’s still important, of course). When you self-edit your copywriting, you also need to focus on making sure the actual copy is as strong as possible.

Every word should convey something important—duplicating a word misses an opportunity to convey something new. Read through your work carefully to make sure you’re not wasting precious space and opportunity by repeating words or using unnecessary words (planning in advance is a personal favorite).

Bonus tip: Reading your work out loud can make it a LOT easier to catch these things and de-jargon your work!

8. Be Open to Feedback

We get that receiving feedback can feel uncomfortable when all you really want to hear is, “Wow, it’s absolutely perfect!” But as copywriters, it’s part of our job to embrace feedback so that we can get the project to the best possible place.

Getting feedback or requests for revisions doesn’t mean that you’ve “failed”; instead, see it as just a normal part of the process. And if you don’t receive any feedback, don’t hesitate to ask for it—it’s only going to improve your work and allow you to deliver more value to your clients.

9. Keep Learning

One of the most important things to remember when you’re learning a new skill is that it’s supposed to be hard. This is a brand new career, after all! If it doesn’t come easily to you when you first start out, that’s perfectly okay (performing heart surgery for the first time probably didn’t come that easily to a surgeon, either!).

It all comes down to practice. And one of the ways we always encourage our Comprehensive Copywriting Academy students to improve their copy, is to look out for copy in the wild. Read the ads you see around you and analyze how they’re written. Is the benefit to consumer clear? Is it obvious what the next step is? Would this resonate with their target audience? Not all of them will be great—and when they’re not, that’s your opportunity to have a go at rewriting the copy to improve it!

10. Avoid the Niche Trap

At the start of your copywriting career, you can’t possibly know what kind of copywriting you’ll enjoy. Even if you *think* you’d like writing for a particular industry or in a certain medium, it could turn out that a different industry or medium is just as fun. Plus, most clients want a copywriter they can work with on multiple types of projects—not just one!

Limiting yourself to just writing email copy when you’ve never written copy for an ad or a sales page, is only going to limit your career and prospects. And now is not the time in your career to limit what you’ll be working on. Give yourself a chance to explore lots of different projects before deciding if you want to choose a niche

11. Never. Stop. Pitching.

OK, I’ll admit it…when I was first starting out as a copywriter, I made some (ahem, a lot) of mistakes. And one of those was certainly when I stopped regularly prospecting for new clients.

As soon as I had work coming in, I was a little…distracted from sending out pitches.

Despite being born with a passion for writing, Comprehensive Copywriting Academy student just couldn’t seem to find a way to make it her full-time gig. But spending 20 years working in the bar and restaurant industry, living paycheck to paycheck, had started to take its toll physically and emotionally.

Within a matter of months of starting the CCA course, Kelsey’s portfolio site was up and running and she landed the job of her dreams. Not only has she already bagged herself a promotion to senior copywriter (in under a year!), she also gets to work on some pretty exciting (ahem, KIM K!!) brand collaborations. Listen in to Kelsey’s story, which is a great testament to taking action, even when you have doubts.

A Sneak Peek at the Episode

[2:37] Our hosts are joined by CCA student Kelsey, who has always wanted to be a writer. After spending nearly 20 years in the bar and restaurant industry to pay the bills, she used her expertise to create a column as a stepping stone into professional writing. Despite getting published consistently, Kelsey was never able to make it a full-time gig.

[7:42] One of the biggest wins from copywriting is that she’s no longer living paycheck to paycheck, in fight or flight mode. This has had a huge impact on her mental and physical health.

[8:38] Kelsey first began copywriting—although she was unaware of this at the time—when she started a nonprofit organization in the pet industry. She was writing the website, email, and social media copy and developed a brand voice.

[10:30] Kelsey vowed to change her life financially in 2022 and figure out a way to write full time. She started the CCA course in January that year, finished it by May, and launched her portfolio site in June.

[13:24] Even before Kelsey launched her site, she had paid for the course with copy work! She started telling everyone about what she was doing and hit the ground running.

[14:21] Kelsey wanted to have three months of all her expenses set aside ready for when she quit her full time gig. She was exploring different brands on LinkedIn and came across a fitness supplement brand that excited her. Not long after, they posted a job for a copywriter!

[15:43] Kelsey’s original goal was to freelance full time but she applied to this role (despite not feeling qualified) and they offered her the job! She’s been there for a year now and recently got promoted to a senior copywriter.

[17:30] Kelsey loves working in a team full of creative and talented people and still does some freelancing when her bandwidth allows– although she’s a stickler on work-life balance now.

[19:55] You don’t have to have a certain number of years of experience in order to be a senior copywriter. It’s really down to your level of skill. And you can develop that skill very quickly if you’re willing to put in the effort like Kelsey has.

[20:52] Kelsey’s openness to opportunities has played a big part in her success. It would have been easy to close herself off at certain points in the journey but her willingness to explore paid dividends in the end.

[22:00] When it comes to new opportunities, like the senior copywriter role that came out, Kelsey’s default is “well, why not?” This attitude has served her incredibly well and even if she hadn’t landed the role, what’s the worst that would’ve happened?

[26:41] Kelsey encourages us to have a strong financial plan in place when taking the leap into full time copywriting, and to honor your needs and not be afraid to say “no” sometimes.

[29:56] Having a strong community around her and a partner who had total confidence in her goals has been a massive source of support in Kelsey’s journey.

[33:44] All of Kelsey’s editorial journalism work helped lay the groundwork for being an efficient and effective copywriter.

[36:00] The company that Kelsey works for has given her the opportunity to work on some very exciting brand collaborations–they recently ended up landing a partnership for an energy drink flavor with Kim Kardashian!

[39:42] If you’re interested in getting into copywriting, Kelsey reminds us that doing it alone is hard and unnecessary. Make sure you have a community that you can lean on and folks that you can reach out to as that helps you realize that you have the power and the skill to do it.

Must-Hear Takeaways

As with every episode, we highly encourage you to listen to the entire conversation! But here are a few of the highlights:

CCA student Kelsey is sitting at her desk, smiling, with her laptop open.

“I was consistently getting published and really enjoying flexing that creative side of my writing but was never able to make it a full-time gig. I constantly had to be working a full-time job in another facet of my life and then be writing on the side and I was just constantly burning the candle at both ends. And It’s something that I haven’t actually realized until recently how I was constantly in that fight or flight mode and now that I’m not, I’m just resting all the time and it is so amazing. That’s one of my biggest copywriting wins is just getting out of the stress and trauma of living paycheck to paycheck and trying to figure out how to get by.” – Kelsey

“Some of the experiences that I’m having are really laying a path for me to dream so big and just see where it takes me.” – Kelsey

“Being able to really reach those emotional benefits is something I think I’m strong at and I think my editorial work helped lay the groundwork for that. I can transfer those skills in a really easy way and make it work towards my benefit and produce better work in that way and faster.” – Kelsey

“We get so used to thinking, “well, you have to have a certain number of years of having done this in order to be a senior copywriter.” And that’s not the case. It really is a level of skill. And you can develop that skill very quickly if you’re willing to put in the effort the way that you have.” – Nicki

When you’re starting a new career in copywriting, you might run into some…less than helpful comments, shall we say. “Copywriting–is that actually a real career?” and “Is that even something you can make money from?” are some of the classics.

But as Taylor Swift so wisely said: “The haters gonna hate (hate hate hate hate)” and you can’t live your life letting other people’s opinions hold you back from your goals. Whether they’re people from your inner circle or strangers online, listen in as Nicki and Kate dig into the best ways to handle anyone getting in the way of your copywriting success.

A Sneak Peek at the Episode

[2:05] Today, Nicki and Kate are digging into the topic of how to tackle haters and doubters. They are going to be looking at handling people from your inner circle, as well as people online who you haven’t met.

[3:30] Often loved ones can be fearful about your journey into copywriting because it’s a career that feels unknown to them. While it’s usually well-intentioned, it can still feel disheartening.

[5:15] Nicki advises us not to take copywriting or freelancing advice from someone who has never been a copywriter or had a successful freelancing career–and especially someone who didn’t even know this career existed!

[6:57] Some people are stuck in an old fashioned way of thinking, and believe you can only learn a career in college, not online. But the online training industry is blowing up and is a great way to learn new skills.

[8:48] A lot of people in our lives have had a more traditional career trajectory and lack experience and insight into what freelancing is, so feel more doubtful about it. But it’s not as risky as people think and actually avoids putting all your eggs in one basket.

[11:03] Some people might see us taking this step and wish that they could do it too, but it’s scary. That means they project all of their anxieties onto you, when at their core, they’re actually wishing that they had the confidence to go ahead and do the same.

[12:38] Remember that you do not have the capability to change other people, who may be less supportive. But what you can do is focus on yourself and surround yourself with people who understand what you’re doing.

[14:18] Students are often afraid to tell people that they have started a new career but you can’t assume that people are going to judge you negatively. More often than not, people think it’s really cool–and might even know someone who needs a copywriter!

[16:11] If you’re scared about what you’d tell people if you were to “fail”, know that everyone’s paying much, much closer attention to themselves than they are to you. And the only way you can really “fail” is if you stop.

[19:07] Students often worry about being judged harshly when posting on social media or sending pitches–but if you’re putting valuable information out into the world and someone takes offense, that’s much more of a reflection on them than it is about what you shared (and you probably wouldn’t want to work with them anyway!)

[23:14] One of the things that is likely to bring about negative comments is if you are running ads for yourself (people love to post nasty things in the middle of the night).

[25:17] Whether it’s opinions from loved ones or strangers, it’s important to know how to discern constructive feedback versus wildly unconstructive, unhelpful comments. If there’s something useful from it, absolutely use it or consider it. But if it’s not, you have to let it go.

“People hear writing and think you can’t make money as a writer. Or the handful of people who think ‘well copywriting is such a hard field to get into, how are you going to make that work?’—I think this comes from fear, the unknown, uncertainty, people who genuinely love and want the best for us and they’re going about it in a way that is letting their fear kind of overshadow and take over your hopes, dreams, etc. It’s not coming from a bad place, it’s coming from a very well intentioned place but nonetheless can feel very disheartening. It can drag you down, can bring your energy and motivation level down and can plant a seed of doubt in your mind.” – Kate

“One thing to think about with all of this, with opinions from people who love us, opinions from complete strangers, feedback, all of it—knowing how to discern constructive feedback versus wildly, unconstructive, unhelpful—I don’t even want to call it feedback—just trash really.” – Nicki

“Know that you’re doing something that frankly is very, very brave and a lot of people wish they could do. I think there’s an element too sometimes with loved ones, particularly people who aren’t as close to us, who see us doing it and think ‘oh I wish I could do that, but it’s so scary’ and they project all their anxieties and worries onto you but at their core, they’re wishing they had the chutzpah to go ahead and try something like this and that can manifest in some weird ways where it comes out less than supportive.” – Kate

Do you ever suffer from “shiny object syndrome”? The feeling of learning something new can bring a lot of excitement but it could also be a sign that resistance is creeping in…

When you first start digging into copywriting, you’re exposed to a whole new world of possibilities, from SEO, to graphic design and web development. We know how tempting it is to want to learn alllll of the skills but in reality, it could be slowing down your success. Listen in as Nicki and Kate reveal the one thing that’s really needed to make sure you achieve your goals.

A Sneak Peek at the Episode

[1:50] When you’re starting out as a copywriter, it can be tempting to learn all of the skills related to copywriting, like SEO, graphic design, and website development. But if your goal is to establish yourself as a copywriter, then copywriting should be your main focus.

[4:39] Working on more than one project at the same time slows down progress on all of them. It can also lead to overwhelm and ultimately discourage you from working toward your main goal.

[8:15] People often think by offering more services they will be able to charge their clients more. But clients are usually happy to hire a number of experts because each one will know the ins and outs of their craft. Whatever your income goal is, you can create that by being a copywriter.

[9:34] When you get to the point of wondering what the next stage is for your copywriting career, take a step back to figure out what your actual goal is. You don’t have to do things like start an agency just because you see someone else doing it.

[11:40] While it’s perfectly fine to dig into something like design more, Nicki warns that it can often end up becoming a distraction and a form of resistance which stops you from stepping out of your comfort zone.

[15:00] When you’re scheduling tasks in your calendar, make sure you question whether they are actually moving you a step closer to your goal. Break down scarier tasks into smaller chunks and lower the pressure to make them more enjoyable.

[17:16] Sometimes we try to pursue other things to bring back that feeling of newness and excitement by learning something new. Try to focus on what you know is going to work to land clients (pitching!) and then do the rest in your free time.

[21:15] You can still pursue things that interest you but your copywriting business needs to be seeing consistent success before you start adding anything else. Take time to get clear on your goal and make sure that the majority of your time and effort is focused on where you want to go.

[26:40] Nicki shares a story about how both Bill Gates and Steve Jobs thought the number one key to success was focus.

“What is your goal? Is it to earn more income? Is it to have more time? Is it to maintain that same level of income but be able to take 10 weeks of vacation? What is your actual desire and what are the possible ways to get there because I think we stop thinking about what we actually want and the different ways to get there and there isn’t necessarily one way to do it.” – Kate

“You need to keep a very careful eye on your time, your energy and your attention to make sure this ‘oh pursuing something new’ is not actually just resistance coming up and going ah look at this shiny object that’s going to distract you and keep you from getting out of your comfort zone and actually making progress on your copywriting career.” – Nicki

“You cannot give 100% of yourself to everything, so decide what goal is going to get what goal is going to get 95% of your professional self and then figure out what additional interest or whatever is going to get that 5%.” – Nicki

“Clients are totally fine hiring an expert in copywriting, an expert in design, and an expert in development. Often clients who are savvy know that it’s almost impossible to find someone who fits all of these roles and does them equally well.” – Kate

A Sneak Peek at the Episode

[1:44] The 2023 Summer Freelance Summit was a three day event (free for CCA students!) with expert speakers talking about different ways to optimize your freelance business. This episode brings you a sprinkling of some of the key highlights from the presenters!

[4:00] It’s important to calculate prices based on your own numbers, rather than looking at competitors. Cost is made up of three factors: material costs, labor costs, and your time. It’s wise to track your time on every project for the first six months and see how your cost compares.

[8:36] Getting help by outsourcing admin tasks and things that aren’t in your “zone of genius” means you can conserve your energy and focus on money maker tasks like discovery calls, client work, and client meetings.

[10:55] Using quizzes can help to increase your leads in a more automated way, while still building a really positive, genuine connection with potential clients.

[14:05] To combat procrastination, try breaking down daunting tasks into smaller, manageable chunks and scheduling them on your calendar.

[20:42] If you’re not already capturing your visitors’ emails, consider adding an opt-in incentive to your website. This means you can follow up with them, continue connecting with them, and nurture them into becoming paying customers.

[22:22] When you create your pricing for a particular offer for a specific client, make sure you are accounting for the time and energy you spend on client work outside of the actual project itself (e.g. email/Slack communication, creating proposals and invoices, client calls etc.).

[28:39] Having awareness of money blocks is crucial, as it enables you to recognize and overcome your resistance to financial success.

[34:06] Holistic health practitioner Tara Bianca walks us through a breathing exercise which we can apply during our workday to help calm the nervous system and calm the mind.

“When we understand why we’re charging what we are, it’s so much easier to say that’s what the price is. If we need to lower the budget, let’s take some stuff away. It’s so hard to figure out how to price yourself and as a service-based provider, where your time is mostly what your service is made up of, it’s even harder. The worst advice out there right now is ‘charge what you’re worth’.” – Shanna Skidmore

“You need to be hiring when you start dropping balls, when things aren’t getting done. When you can feel that shame, like when you’re late on a deadline, and when you know that you’re kind of running out of time here, when you’re doing tasks that just are in your drudgery zone, you start dragging your feet on it. When they keep getting put at the bottom of the pile and you’re not ever getting to it, those are good tasks to start outsourcing, to make sure that they get done.” – Emily Reagan

“The first tool is learning how to take those scary or daunting tasks and actually break them down into much smaller, meaningful, less scary bite-sized chunks to get done.” – Megan Sumrell

“Capturing email addresses from your website visitors also means you can follow up with them, continue connecting with them and nurturing them into becoming paying customers. Because stats show that 97% of website visitors aren’t ready to buy, and 33% will leave a website to research competitors. So if you’re not already capturing your visitors’ emails, then now’s the time to start adding an opt-in into your website. It doesn’t have to be crazy hard either. All you’ll need is a CRM or email marketing platform like ConvertKit or Drip.” – Emma Kate Barker

A Sneak Peek at the Episode

[3:13] This week’s question is all about pitching and, in particular, if we need to change our approach when pitching and following up with ad agencies.

[4:18] Kate advises looking at the agency’s website to see which clients they’re already working with. This way, you can bring an idea to the table for one of those clients when you send your initial pitch to the agency.

[6:00] It doesn’t matter if you’re unsure whether a client is currently working with the agency or not. You can still demonstrate that you can do research and think strategically.

[7:15] There’s no difference between how you follow up with an agency or how you would follow up with an in-house company. You can send similar resources that will benefit them such as a podcast episode or an article.

[8:25] Ad agencies should not be seen as intimidating; they are just like any other business seeking support and expertise!

[10:53] It’s common to face resistance when pitching, so schedule it for the time of day when you’re freshest and most likely to be willing to do it.

[12:15] Reminding yourself of the positive feelings you get when you complete a task you’re not so keen on doing can act as a great source of motivation.

[12:53] The more you pitch, the easier it gets. But the more you push it off, the harder it gets.

Nicki Krawczyk and Kate Sitarz, hosts of the Build Your Copywriting Business podcast, hold mugs that say "Filthy Rich Writer" as they sit side-by-side in front of a couch

“I’m going to look at what they’re doing on their website and their email, sign up for their emails (the clients that is of the ad agency), look at their social media, get a landscape of what those clients are doing, and then come up with an idea to pitch to the ad agency about one of their clients.” – Kate

“Worst case scenario, you put together a pitch and you put in an idea for a client and it’s not a client that they work with anymore. All that means is that, yes, it might not be something they’re going to hire you for on that client because they’re not working with that client anymore, but what you’ve done is that you’ve demonstrated, first of all, you do research because you saw that they did work with that client. And second of all that you’re thinking strategically. And that is going to be enough to get them to go, ‘oh, okay, let’s talk with her.'” – Nicki

“It’s all about how you’re thinking and demonstrating that yes, you’re already thinking of adding value and you’re looking at what you can do to support the business versus the alternative of ‘hire me, I want to work with you!’. So it really is just showing here’s what I can already bring to the table and I’m ready to hit the ground running.” – Kate

“Maybe it’s scheduling it in the time of the day or figuring out exactly when you’re going to be freshest and when you’re going to be most likely to to be willing to do it. For example, if I save pitching until the middle of the afternoon, it’s not going to happen. I can’t be creative to save my life in the middle of the afternoon. But you have to make the decision and the commitment for it to be a priority. Otherwise it’s not going to happen. The the only secret is you have to make the commitment to do it.” – Nicki

A Sneak Peek at the Episode

[3:30] Comprehensive Copywriting Academy student Sonali worked as a social worker for 11 years and despite it being a very rewarding job, she knew she didn’t want to do it forever. She always had a talent for writing and after seeing Facebook ads for the CCA course, she eventually decided to buy the course in January 2021.

[7:33] Sonali knew her sister worked for an advertising agency but wasn’t too aware that copywriting was part of her role. Her first impression of the marketing industry was quite negative as her sister worked long hours and wasn’t very happy. However this was more to do with her working environment rather than the job itself.

[8:58] The fact you can work on your own terms, it’s interesting, and she was already good at writing, made copywriting an attractive career choice for Sonali. She also thought the course provided insane value for the price she had to pay.

[10:07] Sonali was able to transfer a lot of the skills she had gained for her job as a social worker and apply them to her new endeavor in copywriting.

[11:46] The positive and encouraging environment in the CCA Facebook group acted as a fantastic support to Sonali when she was just starting out, especially when she had moments of self doubt.

[13:23] The big “why” behind Sonali’s career shift was the time freedom and financial freedom she could gain. She has much more flexibility to travel to India to spend time with family and the earning potential is a lot higher than it was at her old job.

[14:24] Sonali is very risk averse and knew that she would not respond well to pressure, so she made sure she saved up enough money to give her a cushion in case things didn’t work out.

[16:15] After realizing she needed to go all in on copywriting, Sonali set a goal for herself at the end of last year that by June 2023, she would be making $5K a month. She hit that by April and now has her sights set on her next goal, which is to hit $10K a month by the end of the year!

[19:22] Sonali advises taking your time to hone your craft and land your first clients, and accepting the fact that although outreach can feel painful, it won’t be at that level of intensity forever.

[20:48] It’s important to remind yourself of your big “why” and the wins that you’ve had so that you keep gaining confidence in your work, what you charge, and how you can bring value to your clients.

[22:28] To find success in copywriting, you have to become okay with doing the boring stuff like knuckling down and perfecting your outreach.

[23:09] When it comes to mindset, Sonali reminds us that you can be your own worst enemy or your own superpower but it’s you who gets to pick every day what you want to be.

[26:44] Sonali advises us to never make the mistake of stopping outreach. It’s important to continue pitching, even if you have retainer clients, because things can change.

[28:03] In terms of the projects Sonali works on, she has narrowed her focus into websites, emails, and sales pages. She is now moving more of a retainer based model which involves knowing the whole sales funnel, so that she can provide ongoing support to clients.

[29:54] Sonali thought she needed to finish the entire CCA course before she even started pitching but really you just need to know more than the client, and have the willingness and ability to learn. Don’t let it act as a form of resistance–you can always revisit modules if needed!

[33:22] If you have an affinity for writing, and can afford to invest in the CCA course, Sonali advises giving it a go. The worst case scenario is that you decide it isn’t for you but the best case scenario is that you end up having a career and a life you absolutely love.

“For the value that you provide Nicki, the price that I paid was ridiculous. Honestly, absolutely ridiculous. So another thing I was thinking of was if this doesn’t work out, it’s not a life changing sum of money that I am investing anyway because I am extremely risk averse.” – Sonali

“And what I found really, really incredible was just how supportive the group is. I remember, I think it was one of the early exercises, I think it was the brand voice, I had spent a whole day doing it and I posted it and people where so kind. And so even when people are giving feedback, the fact that everyone was so kind about it, I loved that because I’m pretty sure if my first couple of experiences posting in the group hadn’t been as positive as they were, I would have probably completely withdrawn and not done it because I would have been like “I suck at this, I can’t do it”. But I think the fact that you guys work so hard to keep that a very positive and encouraging environment went a long way.” – Sonali

“Listening to other people’s wins made me think well if they can do it, surely I can do it.” – Sonali

“You don’t have to know everything there is to know about copywriting and marketing, you just have to know more than them and have the willingness and ability to learn.” – Sonali

“You’re literally just one outreach away from someone saying yes.” – Sonali
