When it comes to landing copywriting roles, the proof really is in the pudding. If you can demonstrate that you can do great work, the opportunities are there for the taking–and some of them might even be right under your nose…

In this episode, Nicki and Kate are joined by Comprehensive Copywriting Academy student Joe, who shares how proactively pitching an idea helped him transition out of a career in finance and into a brand new role as marketing content manager (created just for him!). Listen in to hear the importance of showcasing your value, the power of your current network, and why you don’t need to worry about “knowing it all”.

A Sneak Peek at the Episode

[2:09] Hosts Nicki and Kate are joined by CCA student Joe Sabroski, former finance professional turned copywriter. Joe started the CCA course properly in August 2021, after the pandemic helped him to shift gears and realize he wanted to make more money as a writer.

[5:48] Kate asks Joe if he felt like it was less valid getting paid for copywriting versus other types of writing like journalism. Joe just saw it as a different application of his skills and was excited by the prospect of earning good money from it.

[7:35] Shortly after finding out about the CCA, Joe explored a different side hustle: photography and personal branding for entrepreneurs. He discovered it wasn’t really for him as writing was still his passion and so he returned to the CCA course.

[9:45] A significant transition at Joe’s company prompted him to seek change. He proactively pitched a project to the head of strategic marketing at his firm, which led to the creation of a new role for him in July of this year.

[13:33] With copywriting roles, it really comes down to demonstrating that you can do great work. People often overlook their current network, but this can be a great place to start looking for opportunities–especially if, like Joe, you can transition within your current company.

[16:21] Joe’s current role is a marketing content manager. Copywriting makes up about half of what he does but he’s also heavily involved in the end to end process of building a pipeline of content (including the ideation, research, interviewing subject matter experts, writing, etc.).

[18:36] Joe’s role is a lot more diverse than he anticipated, with other responsibilities including tracking and reporting, as well as managing LinkedIn. His favorite part is the research, interviewing and writing, as it allows him to meet all kinds of different people in his company.

[20:54] There’s definitely been a learning curve writing for financial services, where the emphasis is on building longer term relationships, rather than a more transactional approach.

[23:28] Copywriters often worry about having to “know it all” but none of us are ever going to know everything before going into any role. Joe doesn’t feel like this knowledge is expected of him, rather that he has the opportunity to continue learning and working with different experts.

[26:02] If you’re curious about copywriting because you think you would enjoy it, Joe encourages you to start in your network. It doesn’t matter how long you might have been in a certain career for, you can still make the transition happen by showing people your value.

Must-Hear Takeaways

As with every episode, we highly encourage you to listen to the entire conversation! But here are a few of the highlights:

“It really all comes down to showing people that you have something valuable to give them, even the way we pitch (‘I have this proposed solution…’). If you’re in that paradigm of ‘well, this is where I went to school, this is my resume…’, yes, you’re going to be very limited with that approach if you want to change careers.” – Joe

“She’s thrilled that I’m a writer reaching out to her, but it was the fact that I offered to do a project and say, ‘hey, I’ll write a blog for you.’ That’s really what made it happen.” – Joe

“The pipeline from college, to job, to grad school, to whatever, is just a way of doing things. But I just think it’s interesting that I found this whole different paradigm just through online learning. I mean, it’s changed my life and it really gave me a tool to change my career.” – Joe

“They obviously want me to focus on my strengths, but also I’m getting these opportunities to learn about marketing from all angles. So I don’t feel like I’m expected to, you know, be the paid ads campaign expert. We have someone who does that. But I have to work with that role. So yeah, I think, as you’re saying, it’s an opportunity to continue learning and that you don’t have to learn everything all at once. You can do it as you go and none of us are ever going to know everything before going into any role. So I think that’s just a good reminder that you’re going to continue to grow in your career.” – Joe

Feeling unfulfilled and burned out from teaching, Jess Frischolz took the brave step to hand in her resignation just over a year ago. Within just one month of working as a copywriter, she was earning the same money and working fewer hours!

A Sneak Peek at the Episode

[3:07] Feeling unfulfilled by her career in teaching, Jess began looking into copywriting and kept coming back to the Comprehensive Copywriting Academy course.

[8:19] After a short break from the CCA, Jess jumped back into the action sheets, refreshed her memory, and landed an ongoing part-time contract as a copywriter.

[10:36] Entering the freelance world was scary, but Jess didn’t let rejections discourage her.

[15:55] Jess embraced the newfound flexibility in her life by moving to a new state.

[18:32] Having the freedom to create a schedule and routine that really works has been transformational for Jess.

[21:03] There was a period of adjustment while Jess figured out how to manage her schedule and organize her time.

[23:05] Jess replaced her teaching income within just one month and did not have to sacrifice her lifestyle when she made the transition into copywriting.

[25:23] Jess’s mental health has significantly improved since starting her copywriting career. She feels more fulfilled and challenged by the constant variety of work she gets.

[27:46] Jess works as a contractor for a pet supplement company, where she does 28 to 30 hours a week and gets to work on a wide range of projects.

[31:23] As adults, we don’t often put ourselves in those beginner shoes again and forget that new things can feel hard at first.

[34:23] Surrounding yourself with the right network and community of people that are going through what you’re going through can help your transition into a new career.

[38:41] Jess’s persistence and willingness to keep going, even when she felt discouraged, has been a major factor in her success.

Must-Hear Takeaways

As with every episode, we highly encourage you to listen to the entire conversation! But here are a few of the highlights:

Nicki and Kate, hosts of the Build Your Copywriting Business podcast, sit next to each other on a couch laughing with notebooks in their laps.

“This is it. No more excuses. I can’t sit here and complain about my life if I’m not going to do things to change it. And so I went back to the action sheets. I refreshed my memory, pressed forward with the other ones. I didn’t even finish all of the modules if I’m being completely honest. Because then within a couple months, by March, I had landed an ongoing contract part-time. And I was like, holy cow, it works!”

“Did this even just happen? I didn’t need to get another degree to get the same amount of pay? I didn’t need to spend years studying. It blew my mind so that’s huge. So if people are wondering do you get paid well? Yes, you absolutely can.” – Jess

“It’s so discouraging when you just keep getting noes, but you cannot stop because the work is out there.” – Jess

“I get to practice yoga before I start my work, I can do stuff for me and for my own business, and then I can start working on things for my contract position, and then I can work out or I can go for a walk. It’s those kind of things where I have that freedom to create that schedule and that routine that really works for me. That to me is huge.” – Jess

“It is a big deal because there are a lot of people out there who don’t have that, who are doing jobs because they feel like they have to do that job, and whose schedule is not under their control—sometimes from the moment they get up till the time they go to bed. So it’s so wonderful that you have taken that into your own hands and now you get to do whatever you want to do, whenever you want to do it.” – Nicki

A Sneak Peek at the Episode

[1:30] If you are new to following Filthy Rich Writer, learning about the world of copywriting, or deciding if you should pursue copywriting, this is the episode for you! Nicki and Kate will help talk through one of the biggest questions that future students ask: “Is copywriting right for me?”

[3:00] Copywriting doesn’t have to be the perfect career. But you need to ask yourself if you are committed to doing the work and taking action to learn the skills necessary to find success as copywriter.

[5:00] If you commit yourself to learning the skills to become a copywriter, then you have a new set of skills even if you don’t pursue copywriting as a career. You can apply your copywriting skills to a current job. Or decide to pursue copywriting full time. Or part time. Or pick it up as a side hustle when you need it.

[8:50] To find success, you need to be willing to be coached and to learn. You need to learn and practice and refine the principles before you can build a copywriting portfolio and find clients.

[11:00] Another integral part of becoming a copywriter is the willingness to take action. This will often force you to step outside of your comfort zone and isn’t always the fun part, but it is necessary!

[15:00] If you decide to pursue copywriting, find your why! If you can reflect on why you are doing it, your reason for doing something can help push you through the hard days.

A Sneak Peek at the Episode

[2:10] Nicki and Kate welcome Peta as she talks about her background with writing, being a mom, and building her copywriting business.

[4:34] Peta notes how she started a blog called Second Time Around. She uses this blog to talk more about her past experiences and what she has found helpful. Peta also mentions how people finding her blog and asking her to write for them, was the first time she realized that she could actually be paid for writing.

[11:31] Peta talks about when she works best creatively, and how she approaches the limitations on her time. She mentions that she reminds herself to be realistic with herself about the time she has, as well as how she deals with mom guilt.

[14:15] Nicki mentions that the busier you are, the more guilt there is about how much time you’re spending on everything: kids, partners, work. Peta mentions that her experience as a youth worker has helped her immensely, in that she can tell herself that her worth doesn’t lie in what others think.

[16:44] Peta mentions how helpful it is that the CCA Facebook group has a mix of people who are working multiple jobs, or are moving at a slower pace. Comparing yourself to others on social media is so easy, but knowing that everyone is going at different paces can help you see how well you’re actually doing.

[19:10] Someone else’s success is not your failure, it’s just more success. Nicki mentions how it is so tempting to see how you stack up against other people, but not comparing can be incredibly helpful.

[20:38] Kate asks Peta how she balances all of the things competing for her attention. Peta mentions how audiobooks and podcasts help her manage time, because she can listen and learn while she’s doing other things. Communication is also huge for her because it allows her to be realistic about the time that she has with her family and clients.

[25:18] Peta also talks about how her and her husband communicate and balance daily responsibilities with their children, as well as with work.

[27:10] Nicki notes that it’s not the quantity of your work that equals your professionalism. You can be a professional, skilled, thriving copywriter and work with only one or two clients at a time. It’s also not the speed of writing or the amount of time it takes from when you begin your business to landing your first clients. None of that equates to being a more professional copywriter.

[30:05] Peta mentions that you should be able to work from wherever you feel like. Working from the kitchen table, or working in the park. She notes that it feels narrow minded that the only way that you could be taken seriously as a professional is if you compartmentalize your life in a way that where the two areas never meet.

[34:00] Nicki talks about how a current trend is seeing personal things as having less value during the business day. No matter who your client is, they don’t have the right to say that you need to be on a call right now. Especially if you’re not in a physical office. They can request it, but we all have constraints on our time that are all equally valid.

Society right now is very pro-college education. There is nothing wrong with college and there are plenty of wonderful benefits it can provide for many careers. But this emphasis on higher education raises the question of “do I need a relevant degree to get started in copywriting? Do I need copywriting certification?”

“Bachelor’s Degrees are good for Jeopardy,” but not necessary for copywriting. Copywriting does not require an advanced degree, but it does require work! Listen in to hear Nicki and Kate explain why copywriting certificates are B-S and what you do need instead of a copywriting certificate.

A Sneak Peek at the Episode

[1:00] Do you need a copywriting degree or certificate? How can you prove that you are a qualified copywriter? Nicki and Kate dive into this common misconception right off the bat. Spoiler: a copywriting college degree doesn’t even exist.

[3:00] Nicki and Kate discuss how having a background in something other than English or writing can be incredibly beneficial to you as you reach out to potential clients. Not to say it isn’t great having writing experience prior, just that it is not necessary and has it’s own kind of benefits.

[6:30] The Comprehensive Copywriting Academy is vehemently against giving our students a certificate upon completion of the course because all a certificate says is that you paid for the course. A portfolio on the other hand, is exactly what clients want. If your first interaction with a client is, “Hey I am a copywriter, look at my certificate!” then they will know you are not experienced and have no idea what kind of work you can produce.

[8:00] What about Portfolio Schools? Well, Nicki talks about this track for people who may want a little more structure in their education. There is nothing wrong with going to a Portfolio School, if you have any extra $40,000 to invest in yourself and 2 years to dedicate to the degree.

[12:40] The proof of your qualifying attributes as a copywriter are all found in your portfolio. Doing the work is the only way to show people you can do the work!

We hate to be the bearers of bad news, but if confidence is not an issue for you now, it will at some point in your life. We all face situations that challenge or shake our confidence (especially when we’re new and feel the need to take on every copy project!), whether it’s in the form of self-doubt or fear. The good news: You can overcome it.

On this episode, Nicki and Kate sat down with Sheri’ DuMond, who has mentored business and sales leaders for more than 20 years. She is the creator of Confident Warriors and the Confidence Success Circle.

Inspired by their conversation with Sheri’, Nicki and Kate share additional tips for taking action in the moments you feel frozen and stuck.

A Sneak Peek at the Episode

[2:30] While 99% of the time she has unshakeable confidence, Sheri’ explains it wasn’t always this way. She shares her experiences starting in seventh grade and how she came to own her own business helping business and sales leaders bust through self-doubt and fear.

[5:36] Sheri’ digs into why confidence is an issue for people. Confidence is not something we are taught. It’s like any muscle, you have to build it on a regular basis. And it’s important to avoid comparing yourself to others.

[8:05] Imposter syndrome is a real thing. Sheri’ talks about what it is and how to move through it.

[12:20] Sheri’ has her clients explore questions like “Where do you want to be? What have you done to get there so far?” When her one-on-one clients are feeling stuck, she spends a lot of time discussing what they think is keeping them stuck. She often sees different things that are keeping them stuck and helps them find new ways of approaching challenges.

[19:06] Usually fear is what is holding people back. Fear of failure. Fear of not knowing how to move forward. Sheri’ recommends writing down all the fears that are keeping you stuck and asking, “Is this reality? Or is that made up in my mind?”

[22:29] Pick a theme song. Sheri’ also recommends exercising, writing down your goals, and taking breaks to regroup throughout the day.

[29:18] Nicki explains why she added a course about overcoming fears and blocks to the Comprehensive Copywriting Academy. She and Kate discuss why, as adults, it’s so surprising when resistance rears its head.

[32:30] The first step to overcoming roadblocks is to start with your “why.” Why are you pursuing this? Your answer is what will sustain you when, inevitably, the motivation wanes.

[38:52] Another big thing that prevents people from taking action is getting feedback. You’re going to get feedback that makes you feel like you’re off track. Being open to learning is critical; it’s okay not to know everything.

[44:48] You can get inspired from other copywriters. But the moment it goes from inspiration to “ugh, I have to be on Instagram and do a Facebook page,” it becomes critical to refocus on your goals and what you need to do to get there.

[49:46] Everything worth it in our lives is outside our comfort zone. When the voice in your head is directing you away from your big why or the direction you want to head, it’s a good sign that’s resistance.

[50:44] Words matter. Try thinking “I feel stuck” versus the more permanent “I feel stuck.” There’s also a difference between not knowing what action you need to take and not wanting to take that action. “I can’t” is another phrase to strike from your vocabulary.

[55:44] You don’t get confident before taking the action, you get confident by taking the action. If you’re waiting for confidence, willpower, or motivation, you’ll be waiting indefinitely. You need to break projects into tiny, tiny steps so it makes it hard for resistance to creep in.

[1:08:35] One client isn’t a data point that is representative of your work. But remember anything you’re spinning as negative is feedback that you can use to improve. You have to push yourself out of your comfort zone.

[1:14:44] Kate shares the time her car broke down in Italy and why you can’t plan for all possible what-if scenarios.

In addition to “why did you name your company Filthy Rich Writer?!” (for the answer to that question, click here), the question that is asked most often is, “If Nicki makes so much money as a copywriter, why is she teaching it instead?”

With so many courses and trainings on the internet, there is a lot of skepticism. But the question, “why does Nicki teach instead of writing copy,” gets a few things wrong. Nicki helps clarify it in this bonus episode.

A Sneak Peek at the Episode

[1:07] Nicki teaches copywriting and still writes copy for clients. It’s not teaching copy instead of writing copy.

[2:16] When Nicki first got started copywriting 15+ years ago, she made a lot of mistake and wasted a lot of time and money. Later in her career, she had the opportunity to build a team of copywriters. But most knew next to nothing about copywriting. So, she taught them the basics and more advanced tactics.

[3:29] Nicki realized she loved helping them learn how to write copy, incorporate feedback, collaborate with designers, and more. She began to think, what if I could help others build copywriting careers?

[4:42] There are some spammy online programs that teach outdated projects like online sales letters and hand-copying ads. There are also well-meaning programs from young copywriters, but who only know how to teach how they did it. This only offers a limited perspective from a limit experience, which doesn’t help other copywriters avoid possible pitfalls.

[6:42] Nicki teaches copywriting because she finds it so fulfilling to help people create careers they love. She wants each and every student to succeed.

[8:18] There’s a lot Nicki loves about copywriting and teaching copywriting. She loves watching students get more adept and step outside their comfort zones. And she loves interacting with students on calls and in the student-only Facebook group.

Today we are shaking up the usual format as Kate interviews Nicki.

Nicki has over 15 years of experience working with clients including TripAdvisor, Marshalls, Hasbro, Keurig, adidas, and, yes, even Harlequin Romance novels. She’s worked for agencies, in-house and as a freelancer, plus she knows first-hand how to make six-figures as a copywriter.

In this episode, Nicki dives right in to how she got her start in copywriting, the major piece of advice she would have given her younger self, and why she started Filthy Rich Writer and the Comprehensive Copywriting Academy.

A Sneak Peek at the Episode

[1:56] Nicki shares how she got into copywriting in the first place. Having studied public relations in college, Nicki was working at a health club and ended up sleeping a lot because she had no idea what she actually wanted to do.

[8:05] Having a health club background, Nicki’s first client was a health club. Like many copywriters working on their first project, she had the reaction of “oh my goodness, I have a client!!” Followed quickly by the panic of “oh my goodness, now I have to do the work.”

[12:44] Working on staff, freelance, and contract, Nicki talks about her experience working in each of these areas. One of the great things about copywriting is you can do any and all of these roles.

[18:23] When you have 20+ years of experience, you’ve worked on a lot of projects. Nicki talks about one of her favorite projects that didn’t pay well, but was a great experience. There’s potential to earn a lot of money in copywriting, but there are some projects you take because they’re just fun.

[21:22] Lots of Nicki’s advice for building a copywriting business is in the Comprehensive Copywriting Academy and on this podcast, but having a default toward taking action is the one thing she believes has helped her move forward. Focus on that one next step you need to take.

[25:20] Nicki talks about how and why she built Filthy Rich Writer and the Comprehensive Copywriting Academy. When she was starting out, there was no good place to learn how to write copy, how to build your portfolio, and how to pitch clients, among other things. You can make a good living writing.

[34:11] For copywriters with ambitions to build their business into something bigger, Nicki recommends having a solid base. Once you have a really good copywriting income yourself and have surplus work, then you can cross that bridge. Building a business, especially when you involve other people, includes a lot of different considerations compared to a freelance business.

[36:41] Having hired copywriters, Nicki explains what she looks for from copywriting pitching their services. Going the extra mile is really going the extra inch. She shares a story of why following up with prospective clients is so important, as well as red flags that may prevent you getting hired.

[41:55] Nicki has also hired copywriters to write copy for various projects. Once she decides she is going to work with a copywriter, she expects the copywriter to guide the process. She explains what copywriters can do to make the process as easy as possible for their clients.
