A Sneak Peek at the Episode

[03:11]  You have to like writing, because lemme tell you, there’s a lot of writing in a copywriting career. It’s not all writing, there’s a lot of editing as well, a lot of thinking and brainstorming.

[09:34] Being willing to roll with things, being open to other points of view, as a copywriter you’ll come in and you’ll make recommendations.

[10:18]  The more you’re able to be flexible in dealing with people and how you deal with people, the more success you will have.

[13:00] I would imagine if you’re not hustling, there’s someone else that is more than willing to hustle and do the work. You have to get the job done no matter what. You cannot miss a deadline.

[22:15] Clients don’t automatically know how to evaluate copy. They don’t know how you as a copywriter know that you have structured things in a certain way to affect the target audience in a certain way.

[30:07] The concept of patience and persistence. It’s gonna be rare that you get your first draft and it’s perfect. Even just as you’re writing, it’s gonna take some time to come up with the right words and there is a lot of editing involved in copywriting.

Must-Hear Takeaways

As with every episode, we highly encourage you to listen to the entire conversation! But here are a few of the highlights:

Nicki Krawczyk, one of the hosts of the Build Your Copywriting Business podcast speaks into a microphone.

“In order to be a copywriter, you need to get the training to add on to that natural ability to write because there are techniques and skills that you will add on to that natural ability. But that natural affinity for writing is a really important place to start” – Nicki

“My next favorite trait is resilience. Because you might love to write, you might then love some of what you’re writing. When you are facing that feedback that feels like it could be personal or it was just not. But you have that kind of ability to say, it’s gonna improve me as a writer, and it’s gonna improve the final product.” – Kate

“You’re the copywriting expert in the room, but you’re not the copywriting expert in the world. So there’s an element of needing to own the fact that you know what you’re doing and you have a lot of value to provide, but at the same time, being open to the fact that you don’t know everything.” – Nicki

” When you’re sitting down with a group of people in the office. You are all working together. You are collaborating to create the best piece possible. It’s at least 50% editing. You write your copy, you look at it from your target audience viewpoint, and you make your change, you make your tweaks. It’s not an instant process.” – Nicki

Working from anywhere in the world is an aspiration shared by many copywriters. Now, more than ever, clients don’t care where you are. They just care about the work you deliver.

Working with remote clients, whether they’re in a different state or another country, can be a bigger challenge than expected. In this Laser Coaching session, Comprehensive Copywriting Student Melanie is seeking advice from Nicki and Kate about how to set herself, and her clients, up for success!

Listen in to find out how to do it right.

A Sneak Peek at the Episode

[3:45] CCA student Melanie spends a lot of time in Mexico, and is looking to get temporary residency. She is worried that clients might not have confidence in you if you don’t have a physical presence in the same country.

[5:03] Clients won’t mind where you are, as long as you can do what it is that you say you can do. It’s very common for people to be working from all over and traveling while they work.

[6:40] Having a backup plan for infrastructure issues like power or internet outages is crucial for remote work.

[8:50] It’s always a good idea to give clients a deadline where you’re able to over deliver and get it to them a couple of days earlier. Then if there are any unexpected issues, you have built in time to account for that.

[10:09] Confidence in your abilities and professionalism will outweigh any concerns clients may have about your location.

[12:27] Having multiple modes of communication like Zoom, Google Meet, and a Skype number gives you more options in case of problems.

[13:11] A Skype number allows you to dial out and appear as a local number to the recipient, without any additional charges for your client.

Must-Hear Takeaways

As with every episode, we highly encourage you to listen to the entire conversation! But here are a few of the highlights:

Nicki Krawczyk and Kate Sitarz, hosts of the Build Your Copywriting Business podcast, hold mugs that say "Filthy Rich Writer" as they sit side-by-side in front of a couch

“Clients aren’t going to care where you are, as long as you can do what it is that you say you can do. You have your portfolio you can send them to and say, ‘here’s work I’ve done’, and you’re going to do it the exact same way that you would land clients if you were in the U.S., or if you were anywhere. This process is not going to change in terms of pitching.” – Kate

“For your clients, it’s no different whether you’re in Mexico City or whether you’re in Los Angeles. There’s no different experience for them at all. The only thing for you is that there can be infrastructure issues.” – Nicki

“I always give clients a deadline and I usually under promise, over deliver in the sense of I’m going try to get this done probably at least 2 days before the actual deadline, and then maybe the next day I’ll just read it for one more read through to make sure it’s all good. But I feel confident that if I had to send this to the client as is, I could in those situations.” – Kate

“If you want to have your days free and work nights, you can definitely do that. I think the only thing I would say is set boundaries for yourself of saying, ‘okay I know I need to take some client calls – what are those hours going to be for me that I’m available on whatever time zone that your clients are on?’ But otherwise, so much of what you’re going to be doing, you can control your schedule and when and where you do it.” – Kate

A Sneak Peek at the Episode

[1:47] Our guest Felicity explains to Nicki and Kate that her long standing career in health care has caused her to struggle at times with creativity.

[2:44] Nicki discusses how to expand your creative thinking if you are coming from a long term career which has required a very specific way of thinking.

[5:49] Kate advises our guest to use a voice memo initially to help her tap into her creativity.

[7:10] Our hosts suggest ways to lower the pressure on yourself and let your mind unwind.

[8:44] Nicki and Kate remind us of the importance of looking for ways to make work more enjoyable and experiment with what works for you.

[10:17] Felicity emphasizes why you need to give yourself permission to do things in an entirely different way, not just in terms of writing, but in the practical elements as well.

Must-Hear Takeaways

As with every episode, we highly encourage you to listen to the entire conversation! But here are a few of the highlights:

Nicki and Kate, hosts of the Build Your Copywriting Business podcast, sit outside with laptops on their laps and holding Filthy Rich Writer mugs in their hands.

“Kate and I will always say, sometimes when we’re in our heads too much, we’ll go find a different place to work. You know, a hotel lobby somewhere because they usually have Wi-Fi and often coffee, but changing the environment can help a little bit.” – Nicki

“Obviously the challenging thing is that you are the boss and no one else is telling you to get down to work, but it’s nice that you have the ability to tell yourself, you can make up the rules.” – Kate

“I would spend a little time not even thinking about clients, but just noticing the way that you talk and that you think.” – Nicki

“One of the blessings of the CCA for me is that it’s taught me to open up the way I was thinking entirely and totally forced me in a new direction.” – Felicity

“You’re taught you have to do it this way, so even when you guys are saying words like fun, and unwind, and creative, and relaxed, it’s such a foreign concept isn’t it? But it’s just about learning that actually, yes it’s okay, you can do that, it’s fun and actually doing that, your imagination runs freer.” – Felicity

The idea of traveling the world while working is a distant dream for most people. But one of the best things about a freelance career in copywriting is that you have the flexibility to hop on a plane with your laptop whenever you want!

In this episode, we are joined by one of our star CCA students, Chris, who was determined to take advantage of the digital nomad lifestyle. Listen to Chris share his journey of building a successful business while traveling, his practical tips for managing workload, and his advice for anyone hoping to move their business toward an agency model.

A Sneak Peek at the Episode

[2:53] Chris joined the CCA because he was looking for the digital nomad dream and was determined not to return to office life after the pandemic.

[4:46] Chris was hesitant to invest in a course and leave his employment to jump into a new career in copywriting.

[6:15] Building a client base while traveling was a steep learning curve for Chris.

[8:34] One of Chris’ biggest hurdles has been making sure to set expectations about what is realistic to get done while traveling, so that he’s not setting himself up for failure.

[10:08] The hosts discuss the importance of setting boundaries in your business that make sense for you and your schedule, and Chris explains how he has implemented this.

[14:04] Chris has moved toward more of an agency model, so that he can offer his clients a suite of solutions.

[16:41] Chris warns anyone interested in the agency model not to over commit as people’s livelihoods are at stake.

[19:25] Traveling too frequently is challenging and it can be better to just stay in one place for a little while.

Nicki Krawczyk and Kate Sitarz, hosts of the Build Your Copywriting Business podcast, hold mugs that say "Filthy Rich Writer" as they sit side-by-side in front of a couch

“No matter where I am in the world, I’ve stopped trying to do meetings across the full 9-5 day where I am, and instead try to fit it in a couple of hours and then fit my work around whatever I want to do.” – Chris

“That’s certainly something that all of us can and should be doing, protecting that time that is your deep work time and then scheduling your client calls for only a specific window.” – Nicki

“We need to have that kind of employee relationship with ourself as well. Would you ask an employee to work from eight o’clock in the morning until 11 o’clock at night, five days a week? No, you wouldn’t. If you can set your own timelines, you need to still treat your business as a business and make sure that you are not just treating it as a hobby because you soon start slipping in different places, but you also need to make sure that you are holding yourself within those boundaries to make sure you don’t burn out at the same time.” – Chris

“It’s even more valuable when our clients can come to us with a suite of problems and we can come to them with a suite of solutions and make that easy for them.” – Nicki

“I made the mistake of trying to rely too much on one customer at the beginning. And I think since I kind of moved away from that, it’s been a lot better in terms of job satisfaction and also getting more work because you’re forced to go out and speak to different people and figure out what different companies want, rather than just being very good at one company’s requirements.” – Chris

A Sneak Peek at the Episode

[1:36] Today Nicki and Kate are getting your out of your home office and talking about all of the different places you can work from! Work from home means work from anywhere, and it can be so refreshing to shake up your routine by moving around once in a while.

[2:00] Kate shares that one of her favorite locations to work out of is the hotel lobby! It’s an energetic change of scenery that gets you out of the house. Plus, you can grab some coffee or a cocktail from the hotel bar.

[4:04] A huge benefit to working outside of your house is it can open up different parts of your creativity! A change of scenery can definitely change your mindset and can help your creativity!

[6:10] Nicki shares that working in a different location than your home can definitely help with interruptions and distractions that commonly pop up in your own house. By having that physical separation it’s easier to work through your day free of interruptions.

[10:15] Taking a shot at the digital nomad lifestyle gives you an opportunity to explore the world. Nicki points out that it also adds structure to your day that can be hard to find when working solely from the home office.

[13:15] Our hosts emphasize that wifi is a non-negotiable part of the digital nomad lifestyle. The best practice is to bring a wifi-hotspot device so that you know you’ll always have connection.

[17:40] It’s essential to have cloud storage as a digital nomad in case of any accidents that compromise your computer. You need to back things up to the cloud because eventually, your computer will die!

[19:40] Kate explains that you may want to tell your clients if you are working on the road, just so that they know. You definitely don’t have to, but it’s best they know should anything come up as a result of your travel.

[23:31] Nicki closes the episode with some encouragement to give working outside of your house a try! You never know what a change of setting may do to positively impact your daily routine.

But working as a digital nomad isn't quite as easy as it seems. Here's what to know before you go.

tips for digital nomad copywriters
Become a digital nomad—someone who travels the world, but works while they do it—is becoming a more and more common goal for copywriters. But making it work isn’t quite as simple as packing up your computer and hopping on a plane. Today, we’re going to talk about important tips to help make sure you can make it work.

There are a lot of terrific things about being a copywriter—fulfilling work, a creative outlet, a great income—but one of the best is that copywriting can be very flexible. Many people don’t have the kind of career that lets them work from home, much less work overseas.

Recently, the Filthy Rich Writer team experimented with spending a few months working remotely. While I loved living in Panama, Costa Rica, and Nicaragua, it wasn’t just like working in Boston.

Here are a few tips to help you make the most of living and working overseas, no matter where you choose to work.

Psst: Wondering about my travel essentials? Check out all my must-pack items right here >>

1. Line Up as Much Work as Possible in Advance

This may seem obvious, but bear with me. It’s always more easy to find work when you’re willing to periodically go into a client’s office. Not being able to do that is going to naturally limit your pool of potential clients. You also need to line up as much work in advance before your trip for the same reason: Some people may be comfortable with you working remotely—but they want to work with you first.

2. Be Honest with Your Clients

If a client asks where you are or whether you can meet with them, it might be tempting to tell them a little white lie. But that’s never how you should work with your clients and, as long as you make it clear that you’re working a normal schedule and you’re still just as available to do work, you should tell them that you’re working remotely. That said, though, there’s no need to volunteer the information unless it will affect how you work with your clients.

3. Stay Somewhere That Offers Some Privacy

Whether you choose to book hotels, home rentals, or one of those coliving/coworking spaces, you need to make sure you have some space that offers quiet and privacy. You can’t take calls—or write great copy—if you have lots of noise in the background.

When you’re looking at reviews for hotels and Airbnbs, make sure that “quiet” is one of the attributes in reviews. There’s nothing worse than trying to sit down to work and having to deal with screaming tourists outside or, on the other hand, trying to sleep in anticipation of dealing with a long upcoming day of work and dealing with the bumping nightclub downstairs. (Been there.)

4. Ensure You Have Access to Friends

Whether you’re traveling alone or with someone, you still need more friend outlets. Hostels and coworking/coliving places can be great places to meet people, but they aren’t everyone’s style. If you’re going to be overseas for a while, spread the word to family and friends and invite them to visit you.

They’ll need to understand that you’ll have to spend some parts of every day, but having friends in town will help you avoid homesickness and feeling like you’re so separate from the people you love. Even if friends or family can’t visit you, make time for phone calls at least a few times a week.

You can also look for digital nomad communities in your area. Look to Facebook groups, co-working spaces, or Meetup.com.

5. Dedicate Time to Work

If you’re traveling on your own, this isn’t too different from being at home. But if you’re traveling with friends or your significant other, it can be harder for them to understand that you need 4 hours (or more) a day to actually do the work that allows you to take the trip. Be sure to lay out your expectations and needs ahead of time, and also, especially on days when you’re traveling from one city to another, schedule out your work hours in advance.

6. Use Time Zones to Your Advantage

If your clients are all in the US and you’re in Europe, you can spend your days playing tourist and dedicate nights to copywriting work. Or maybe you wake up a bit earlier to get in a few hours before wrapping up work later at night. Remember, you set your schedule so take advantage of the flexibility of copywriting!

There are plenty of other things to think about when considering working overseas, but these are logistics you’ve got to nail down—well before you leave.

Your turn! Have you ever worked overseas? Do you have any other tips to offer? Let us know in the comments below!

Traveling the world is a pretty common dream, but certain jobs make it easier than other. And not just easier to take a vacation—but easier to spend weeks, months, or even years living overseas. Becoming a digital nomad—someone who travels the world, but works while they do it—is becoming a more and more common goal for copywriters.

Sure, you can work on staff or at an agency, but you can also do it as a freelancer or contractor.

Freelancing offers you the most flexibility. You can decide what hours you want to work, and from where you want to work. Which means, of course, you could choose to work from a brownstone in Brooklyn or a hut on the beach in Bali.

3. Stay Somewhere That Offers Some Privacy …

4. … And Reliable WiFi

Working on the beach sounds nice, but bear in mind that that beach had better have a strong and reliable WiFi signal. You need to be available at all times, and you can’t blame missing conference calls or missing deadlines on the lack of internet access.

Even the swankiest Airbnbs may have less reliable WiFi than advertised. Make sure you have backup plans, including the route to the nearest cafe with WiFi and your own portable WiFi device.

7. Use Time Zones to Your Advantage

Most freelance work requires a meeting or two with your client…but if you’re in Caracas, it’s hard to get to Chicago for an 1:30 meeting on Tuesday.

You don’t have to pack up all your belongings, put them into storage, and sell your home to be a digital nomad. (Though you can, absolutely, do that if you choose!) There are so many ways you can take advantage of the flexibility of copywriting, even if you’re spending a weekend away to work on your business, taking your laptop to a nearby hotel lobby, or, yes, working remotely for two months from Italy.

Nicki and Kate dig into what you need to know to successfully take advantage of copywriting’s location flexibility.

Dark and stormy waves with whitecaps

The job market can often feel shaky…particularly for copywriters. And it seems like every night the evening news has a story about jobs moving overseas or being performed by a robot. Sure, a robot is far-fetched, but what about losing your job to a cheaper competitor in another country? Well, I certainly wouldn’t lose any sleep over it.

I definitely understand where this question is coming from. The design services—and all the other services on those sites—are cheap. Sometimes quite good quality, but cheap. (That cheapness is part of the reason I don’t recommend listing your copywriting services there, by the way.)

A major reason that the services are so inexpensive, though, is that many of the service providers live in countries where overall wages are lower. And this is perfectly fine, very much a win-win scenario for graphic design needs, research needs, even remote personal assistance needs.

Why a Native Speaker Is Always the Better Choice

But when it comes to the solid grasp of your country’s languages and the nuances contained therein, there is no one who can do it like a native.

It's Easier Than You Think to Start Your Copywriting Career

Even Americans and Brits who (arguably) speak the same language face huge barriers in writing for the other version of English. Different wording and slang, not to mention different cultural sensibilities and styles, make crossing that copy divide a challenge.

So, should you be concerned about copywriting work in your country (whatever country that is) becoming a cheap commodity and going overseas? No. You shouldn’t. Copywriting is a skilled profession that takes years to master (if ever) and requires an exceedingly firm grasp of the language being written.

Woman sits at cafe in Paris wearing a red beret and eating a baguette.

It’s the dream of many to work overseas as a copywriter and pen a few brilliant words every once in a while to pay for their apartment in Paris and the croissants that keep them fed. And here’s the thing: There are some copywriters that are able to do just that. However, it’s not quite as simple and idyllic as it sounds.

Let me start with the conclusion and then work backwards. The fact is that living and working as a copywriter overseas is hard, but it’s not impossible. If this is really your dream and you’re dedicated to making it happen, it’s possible! It just may not be very easy.

(*A quick note: I’m talking from an American viewpoint, but everything here will hold true for your particular nationality. I’m using “American” as a shorthand, if you will.)

There are two ways you can work overseas as a copywriter. 1) You can work for a company overseas and write copy for them or, 2) you can live overseas and write copy for various freelance clients.

Working for a Company Abroad

Downsides

Let’s talk about the downsides of road number one before we talk about the upsides. First, to work for a company overseas, they usually have to approve you for a work visa and that can be challenging to find a company that will be willing to do that. (It can be expensive and require a lot of paperwork.)

Second, you may face trying to write in a language that is not your native one. Even for an American, writing in British English requires a lot of learning and study to master the idiosyncrasies that make up the differences between American and British English not to mention the spelling differences (humor vs. humour or realize vs. realise!).

Upsides

Now, for a few of the upsides. For companies overseas that are specifically advertising to an American audience, hiring an American copywriter can be the best way to ensure that their copy resonates with that audience. This is an excellent scenario for a copywriter; you get all the benefits of working for a company while still writing in your native tongue.

Another upside of this scenario is that you have the built-in social circle of your office. Moving to another country can be lonely, but having a group of coworkers that you can occasionally socialize with will help to make this a bit easier. And they’ll be able to show you the ropes of living in that area. Consider all the things that go with moving to a new place: Just navigating the transit system can be a huge challenge.

Writing for Freelance Clients Abroad

Now, let’s explore scenario two: working overseas and writing for freelance clients.

Get answers to you questions about copywriting

Downsides

It’s especially difficult to get clients when you’re in a different country. You can’t meet in person for meetings and, though you can always Skype or use Zoom, that won’t be enough for some clients. Depending on the country, too, you may be living in a time zone that is several hours different from your potential clients and that may affect your working relationships.

Bear in mind, too, that if you’re living abroad and not there on a work visa, your taxes may be especially complicated and you may have to leave that country periodically, depending on their laws. (Many countries allow you to stay for up to six months without a work visa before you have to leave for a specified amount of time.) (Note: If you’re planning on working abroad, consult your tax professional before you pack your bags!)

Upsides

On the upside, though, working for clients in your own country while working overseas means that you’re working in the language you’re most comfortable with and most likely to find success in. You may also find it comparatively easier to find clients in your country of origin than in the new country in which you’re living.

Now’s the Time to Start Planning

Again, I want to stress that both of these scenarios are possible. There are people living these lives right now. They’re difficult…but they’re not impossible. As you become good at what you do, you’ll be in greater demand and better able to direct exactly where you want to go.

If you want to live the life of an expat copywriter, now’s the time to start planning for it. The first step, of course, is making sure that you have the skills to actually write copy—and write it well. That’s why we created our training: to offer the most comprehensive online training available, with plenty of flexibility and help along the way.

It’s possible to make your dreams come true—it’s just up to you to pursue them.
