A Sneak Peek at the Episode

[1:12] Interested to learn why you aren’t hearing back after pitching to freelance clients? On this episode, Nicki and Kate provide examples of how not to pitch to freelance clients and what mistakes to avoid.

[2:52] Kate discusses the first and biggest mistake to avoid: not being specific in your pitch and using a recycled templated response. Instead, you should take the time to research the company and create a pitch based on a specific idea you have for that organization and explain how you could implement it.

[5:41] Nicki explains an example she’s had with someone making a generalized pitch to her about Facebook ads without doing research and how the lack of research impacted her response. Kate then mentions the importance of bookmarking the Facebook Ads library and how to use it as a tool when pitching.

[6:02] Kate reads an example pitch full of mistakes, from the subject line to the generic copy in the email. Nicki and Kate then go through each part of the email pitch and explain how it should have been crafted. They also express how this type of vague pitch comes across negatively to a company because it is not tailored to their specific needs and demonstrates a lack of effort.

[14:36] Kate reads another example of an email that reads more like spam than a freelance pitch. Nicki and Kate explain that if your pitch is too generic and doesn’t provide clear research and examples of how the company would benefit, the company won’t find it worth looking into your pitch further.

[17:37] Nicki goes over a few examples of pitches that sound more thorough and might even be the direction you are headed. She then digs deeper into why these examples come across negatively and explains how to modify them to create a friendly, value-focused pitch.

[20:34] When you make a pitch email about yourself, it will not be successful. When you make the pitch email focused on the company, what you like about them and an idea that is specific to the company, there is a big difference in how those are received. This type of pitch is more value-oriented and useful to the company because you are identifying a need they might not know of and offering a solution.

[23:21] Nicki and Kate provide tips and insight into why showing your personality and that you are human in a pitch creates a different vibe on the receiving end. They provide personal anecdotes on the types of pitches they have enjoyed receiving and what made them stand out.
