Ep. 98: Why Freelance Copywriters Should Still Apply to Full-Time Jobs

By Nicki Krawczyk

Even if you’ve decided that the freelance life is the only option for you in your career, there are still good reasons to apply for full-time jobs. And we will tell you why!

In this episode of the podcast, Nicki and Kate are diving in the why and how you should be applying to full time jobs as a copywriter. There can be a lot of benefits to applying to these listings–as long as you are doing it the correct way.

A Sneak Peek at the Episode

[1:50] Nicki dives right in with why it’s worth your time to apply to full-time roles even if you are a freelancer. The company might realize that a freelancer really is the best fit for the role–having that conversation might lead to a beneficial situation for both you and the client.

[4:06] Freelancers that pitch themselves to full-time roles might be helpful in filling a job listing while a company hunts for the right full-time person. The work might still need to be done temporarily and you could be the right interim solution.

[7:00] Working freelance for a company could open many doors. As a freelancer, you might enjoy working with a company so much that you might want to go full-time. But there are so many more positives, such as expanding your network, getting paid, and future work.

[8:28] Companies often have quick and easy applications posted online. Kate and Nicki encourage everyone to take a different route when applying for jobs. You want to make sure your application gets to the hiring manager and Kate gives steps on how to make this happen.

[13:16] Kate is jumping next into resumes and cover letters. Whether you are looking to freelance or you want to be on staff, just like any other writing that is done as a copywriter, you need to hook the reader and convey the benefit to the company. Treat this like a pitch, show your interest, add value, and show what you can do for the company.

[20:03] Keep your cover letters focused. Nicki explains that there is no need to get wild with the cover letter for the sake of it, but don’t stick to the safe option just because it’s what you are used to.

[22:01] Nicki talks about how you should react when you see the required years of experience in a job description. Don’t let this be a deterrent to you when you see a number that might be higher than what you have. Your work can speak for itself as a copywriter and the company needs a certain level of quality more than the quantity of years.

[26:30] Kate briefly touches on a selected credits resume. For cases where you’ve just started copywriting and your regular resume has nothing to do with copywriting–a selected credits resume is what Nicki and Kate suggest sending. This is how you can show off the work that is relevant and actually matters.
