Ep. 37: Improve Your Copywriting Productivity and Professionalism

By Nicki Krawczyk

Working with clients, we’re in charge of managing tons of little requests coming in on calls, via email, on Slack, and any number of other platforms your clients may use for communication. It’s crucial to your long-term success (and landing repeat work with clients!) that you have an effective system for managing all these requests.

Nicki and Kate dig into tips and tricks they use to ensure nothing gets lost so you can provide the best service possible—and never make your clients question whether or not you’re the right copywriter to work with. Mastering these tips will not only be beneficial for your clients, you will become a more effective professional, too!

A Sneak Peek at the Episode

[1:29] Nicki and Kate discuss one of the reasons this topic came up for them. They express the challenges that come with clients constantly coming at us with a million little requests and how it can be difficult to stay on top of it all when you have multiple clients. Nicki and Kate go further in explaining how this is especially challenging because these requests are coming in through different platforms (Slack, email, phone calls, etc.) so it is easy to lose track of where notes are for each small request.

[3:03] Nicki and Kate discuss how a lack of attention to these small details can be a big problem. Even though these are little requests, every time you miss something you are letting your client down and you are making your client question whether or not you are the right person to partner with.

[3:37] When you are working with a client you are taking that copywriting work off their plate. Nicki and Kate explain how when a client then needs to follow up with you to get small things, you are putting that work back on their plate and that’s the last thing you want to do to a client.

[7:14] Nicki and Kate express the importance of strategically slowing down with your emails to ensure a comprehensive reply instead of a rushed, scatterbrained reply. Kate provides tips on addressing all parts of the email and they discuss how this is beneficial for you and the client.

[11:14] Nicki mentions David Allen’s book Getting Things Done and how it highlights the fact that your brain is not meant to hold all these little pieces of information. Your brain wants closed loops and so when you leave all these admin tasks or emails unopened, this creates a large mental load that takes a toll on your productivity. Kate and Nicki provide tips on how they organize their time and admin tasks to prevent an overwhelming mental load.

[13:39] Nicki mentions how she uses the website and app for Todoist.com for her to-do lists because it syncs her lists on her computer and phone. She uses this for her personal and professional life to help organize all small tasks.

[17:17] A big takeaway that Nicki and Kate discuss throughout this podcast is that your organizational system is unique to you but no matter which method you choose, everything needs to be in one place in the end. It’s easy to lose track when communicating across various platforms, so it’s important to have one set way to organize all ideas and to-dos.

[24:21] As Nicki says, be your best self with your clients; be your best self for the people who are relying on you to get stuff done effectively. Give grace and flexibility to your clients and remember they are human, too.

[33:39] Ever wondered how to exude more professionalism? Nicki and Kate chat about how to be an effective professional that clients will want to hire for additional projects and refer to their colleagues. Remember, your copy is not the only part of your job; meeting deadlines, being organized and your attention to detail are just as important to clients.
