Ep. 9: Why Freelancing in a Recession is Wildly Effective

The first time Nicki made six figures as a copywriter was in 2008…right in the middle of the Great Recession…right after she left her full-time job to go freelance. Why was she able to do so well then and why are copywriters doing alright now, even though many companies are being forced to lay off staff left and right? Here’s the key: companies still need copywriters because copy drives business.

Nicki and Kate break down why copywriters are well positioned to weather a recession and how the actions that you take as a freelancer can benefit you when the economy inevitably takes another downturn.

[2:02] Recessions are inevitable. Every so many years, the market will dip. But businesses react differently than individuals act. People hunker down, stop spending as much, and hang on to the money they have. Businesses can’t do that. They have to keep chugging along and get hyper-focused on selling. Copywriters are a huge part of that.

[4:50] Content writers are often impacted first because it is designed to inspire, entertain, and educate. Content is important, but not essential, whereas copy is a must-have.

[7:43] Businesses are always interested in hiring freelancers. But, in an economy where they’ve had to let go or furlough staff, they can’t bring on full-time copywriters. So, they’re more likely to hire a freelancer in this situation.

[9:11] Kate shares her personal experience working as a copywriter during 2020. Like many people, she was uncertain as to what was the year would bring, but by July she’d had her best year yet. Her clients still had plenty of copy needs.

[13:45] Nicki hit six figures as a freelance copywriter for the first time in 2008 during the middle of the Great Recession. As she explains, that’s because a copywriter’s output can be directly tied to a company’s bottom line.

[17:17] Companies aren’t doing copywriters a favor. We are benefiting companies by creating messaging that resonates with their consumer. We are helping businesses stay in business.

[18:24] Copywriters don’t do well because of the recession. It’s important to do the same things you would do anyway. You continue to pitch. You maintain your rates. You deliver great work to your clients. You’re a business, too.
