Ep. 64: Effective Evening Routines for Copywriters

By Nicki Krawczyk

There’s a lot of talk about morning routines (including our own episode on it – check it out!). But equally as important are evening routines. If you don’t have a solid system for prepping for the day ahead, your morning routine may not even matter!

Nicki and Kate talk about how you can use the end of your day to set yourself up for success for the following day. They share their best practices and tips for being intentional with how you spend your time, as well as elements of their evening routines that they need to work on, like have a true shut-down time and ensuring the workday doesn’t creep into home time.

A Sneak Peek at the Episode

[1:30] There is a lot of attention and focus on morning routines. But evening routines are important too, shutting down at the end of the day is important. It’s hard to have enough energy at the end of the day to finish with a good routine.

[6:15] It can be helpful, at the end of the day, to look forward at the calendar and block off time to accomplish what you need to get done. And be sure to build in padding so you don’t take away from your free time.

[7:15] Make sure you schedule a “shut down” time, when you are done with work and can transition to personal time. Having constant access to your work via technology makes this especially hard!

[10:00] Our phones can make it so hard to shut down at the end of the day. Kate encourages listeners to get rid of apps related to work that they don’t absolutely have to have. Keep it on your computer so when you walk away at the end of the work day you can distance yourself from work.

[13:30] Our whole daily routines were upended in 2020. It has changed the work/life balance for many and left our hours “uncontrolled.” A good evening routine can help us regain that routine.

[16:30] Another important thing to be aware of is how we are spending that time in the evening once we’ve logged off of work. Nicki finds that watching TV doesn’t give her brain a chance to refresh. The same can be said for social media and mindless quizzes on the internet.

[20:00] During the evenings and weekend be aware of what activities you are choosing to do while taking time to recharge; reading books, going for a walk and seeing friends are all activities that let us refresh!

[22:00] Kate finds that reading nonfiction books, even interesting ones, help her fall asleep at night. She is also a big fan of the Calm app and their bedtime stories.

[23:30] If you have a hard time powering down at the end of the night there are a lot of resources out there to help. Find what works for you to allow your brain to relax!
