Laser Copy Coaching: Value-Based Pitches, English-Language Nuances, and About Pages

By Nicki Krawczyk

In this episode, three CCA students each sit down with Nicki and Kate to ask their most pressing questions. These 10-minute laser coaching sessions are designed to help students overcome their biggest roadblock so they can continue making progress on their goals.

Cleoniki asks for feedback on some of her pitch emails, Angela talks about English-language nuances, and Jenn asks for help battling some resistance.

Even though it’s not you in the hot seat, there’s plenty you can take away and apply to your own copywriting business.

A Sneak Peek at the Episode

[1:27] Cleoniki is the first student for this laser coaching call. She has had a couple of clients but has been having less success hearing back than she wants. She asks Nicki and Kate to go over some of her pitches with her and make them less sales-y.

[6:20] Nicki and Kate tell Cleoniki that you want your pitches to sound like something you would say to a friend. Avoiding that “sales-y” tone and trying to show the potential client what you can give them, not what they can do for you.

[8:40] Nicki suggests that Cleoniki includes more of a punch in her pitches, making sure they have pointed ideas without giving away too much.

[11:20] A tip Nicki and Kate give Cleoniki is to send a time to meet in the pitch email to make it one less step that they have to do for you. If you give them a time and it works for them, great. If it doesn’t, they will let you know when they are free.

[12:37] The next student is Angela. She wants to go over some product descriptions for a client who wants to target a larger audience.

[17:30] The Facebook group is for more than just feedback on copy. Nicki and Kate suggest to Angela that she utilizes the access to a large international population to poll for some user research to make sure her copy will reach the intended audience.

[25:10] The final student is Jenn. She is hitting resistance on her About Me page. Nicki dives right in and suggests watching coaching call recordings where they go over portfolio reviews and get some ideas from others that way.

[29:30] Kate suggests getting words on the page. Writing out as much as you can and tweaking later or as you go can help bust through that resistance. Nicki says to try writing for yourself as if you were your own client (third-person optional, just make sure to change it back!).

[30:30] For the About Me page, Nicki highlights the importance of asking yourself what it is you want the page to get across to potential clients. What do you want to know about the type of copywriter you are? What will make a potential client fo “I want to talk to this person more!”

[36:30] Don’t let working on your About Me page take you away from other important things. You can always change it later.

[37:00] Your family and friends may have no idea what copywriting is or what you do but talking out your projects with others can help you think differently in surprising ways.

[38:25] If you are facing resistance, you are heading in the right direction: keep going!
