Ep. 69: Preventing Burnout as a Copywriter

By Nicki Krawczyk

There’s a big difference between “I don’t want to do this because it’s hard” (or scary, or uncomfortable…) and “I don’t want to do this because I physically don’t have the energy today.” The first is resistance. The second? You may be getting real close (or perhaps even experiencing) burnout.

Nicki and Kate are digging into some ways you can start to recognize the difference between resistance and burnout and tactics for preventing your train from ever getting close to pulling into Burnout Central Station (like having a couple of days each week that you do not schedule work!).

A Sneak Peek at the Episode

[0:55] Our hosts know from experience that it’s much better to prevent burnout versus trying to come back from it. Fortunately, this episode is filled with tips on how to keep it from happening to you.

[2:17] The difference between resistance and burnout must be mentioned. Resistance comes from a place of fear or discomfort, while burnout is something entirely different. Nicki and Kate touch on some warning signs that burnout is starting to creep up on you.

[10:17] Now that you know the warning signs that you may be getting burnt out, you need tools for managing the situation. Here, our hosts share direct steps that you can take to tackle the issue while it’s still early.

[16:17] A key way to prevent burnout is to prioritize downtime. It may be tempting to fill your time off with other activities outside of work, but in the long run, this will actually sabotage your productivity.

[22:37] Nicki and Kate point out that part of preventing burnout is identifying what activities wear on you the most. Once you know which activities those are, you can space them out accordingly to give yourself time to decompress in between them.

[26:49] How you structure your day has a huge impact on your stress levels. Take note of what times of day you are at your peak and schedule high-energy projects for this time; this can go a long way in keeping your brain sharp.

[31:36] Prioritizing what deserves your focus is not only a key part of preventing burnout but also life in general. Nicki and Kate talk about how the things that matter the most to you are the only things that should get your highest level of attention.

[36:42] Nicki shares that a great way to manage your energy is to manage yourself as though you were someone else. Self-management is an awesome way to protect the most important asset to your life and business: you!
