Gifts to Give to Your Copywriting Career This Season

By Nicki Krawczyk 2 Comments

Gifts to get your copywriting career for the holidays
It’s the time of year when we show gratitude for and give gifts to the ones we love. But while we’re celebrating, let’s not forget to show a little love to the founders of the feasts: our careers. Just what would your copywriting career like most to receive this season?

This is not one of those, “you’ve treated your friends and family, now treat yourself!” kinds of posts. Instead, this is about treating something that you might not normally think of treating: your career.

I know, I know. Your career is supposed to be how you can afford to treat other people (and yourself). But just like a plant, your career can always benefit from a little tender, loving care. And if you can’t offer up a little TLC during the holiday season, when can you?

So, with that, here’s a suggested gift list for your career.

Books

There’s nothing your career will love more than learning new things, and these books are a great way to do it. Big Magic by Elizabeth Gilbert—a treatise on creativity and creation. Steal the Show by Michael Port—a book about how to speak more effectively. Getting There by Gillian Zoe Segal—words of wisdom from worthy mentors. Rising Strong by Brene Brown—a tool for how to get over disappointments and setbacks, both big and small.

Courses

I’m a big fan of Udemy and Skillshare for learning important things in bite-sized chunks. (Of course, I’d recommend our Comprehensive Copywriting Academy, too, but you’re already a member, right? 😉 ) Udemy often offers sales on its courses, and when it does, I’d recommend taking Mini Habits Mastery by Stephen Guise. It takes you deep into what willpower is made up of and how tiny little habits can help you change your life.

Business Cards

One easy way to help your career grow and thrive is to get yourself a nice set of business cards. You don’t necessarily need a designer to create them; Moo.com has some templates that might work perfectly. Be sure to include your name, phone number, email address, and, of course, online portfolio URL.

A New Portfolio

You know you need an online portfolio, and you know you need a print portfolio. But they also need to look nice. So, if either needs an upgrade, now’s the time to get your plans in motion.

A Break

Yup, you read that right: a break. Sometimes what your career needs is for you just to stop worrying and fretting over it. Now, there are plenty of times of year when you don’t have that option. When you need to keep up the steam by prospecting and reaching out to potential clients. But in December, and especially during the second half of the month, most people’s businesses hibernate. And when that’s the case, it’s okay for you to let your business take a little cat nap, too. That way, when December’s over, you’ll be ready and raring to get moving.

More Gift Ideas

It’s time to treat yourself—and your business. Nicki and Kate dig into gifts you can give your business, but these aren’t your typical gifts. These are gifts that can help move your business forward, whether by giving you more time to focus on your business, boosting your skills, or taking care of your business’s greatest asset: you. I’m finally splurging on a top of the line, powerful computer, instead of making do with a cheaper, weaker one. My computer is the physical vehicle to take my copywriting career to its (hopefully) lucrative places; I’d like to make sure my a major part of my engine is in top shape and ready to go for a long, thrilling, power-intensive ride.

      Hi Giana,

That’s smart—you certainly can’t get very far without a good and dependable computer! (Plus, talk to your accountant, but you should be able to deduct it… 🙂 )
