Ep. 68: Learning to Embrace the Flexibility of Copywriting

By Nicki Krawczyk

“Hold on Loosely” was a hit in the early 80s, but it’s also the theme song of this podcast episode. As copywriters, we have so much flexibility, but often we don’t take full advantage of that flexible because we let our own self-imposed roadblocks get in the way.

Nicki and Kate are discussing the importance of exploring opportunities as they come and “loosely” planning versus trying to wrangle too much control over scenarios that we have zero control over—or may never happen in the first place!

A Sneak Peek at the Episode

[1:25] It’s common for our students to have an exact vision of what they want to do with copywriting once they start their business. Nicki and Kate discuss why you shouldn’t get too far ahead of yourself in mapping your career since you might actually be closing yourself to great opportunities.

[5:27] Planning is an important part of finding success in any part of life and goal setting is a great skill. But, in copywriting your planning and idea of success shouldn’t restrict you from exploring new opportunities. Here, our hosts explore how to balance the two.

[8:14] We all have a tendency from time to time to want to know everything that’s going to happen in the future, but Nicki notes that this can hinder you from taking action. Nicki shares tips on how to combat this from happening by taking things one step at a time.

[13:12] Very little is set in stone when it comes to copywriting. Sometimes trying to find the “perfect” version of every situation can end up holding you back.

[15:42] Kate illustrates that you need to treat each opportunity individually. Just because it may seem similar to another experience, doesn’t mean it will be the exact same.

[16:57] Copywriting gives you the skills and the chance to work from anywhere, and for many different kinds of companies. Because of this, Nicki and Kate emphasize why you should be open to where your career might take you.

[20:57] Our hosts dive into the fact that the focus of your career should be providing quality pieces of work no matter where you are or what type of work you are doing. In copywriting the most important reflection of you is your portfolio.

[23:12] Kate reminds us of past Comprehensive Copywriting Academy students who embraced the flexibility of copywriting and how it affected their career.

[26:12] Copywriting comes with a natural safety net in the fact that the skills you have are yours forever. You will always have a value to add to companies in order to make money. Use that safety net to allow you to embrace the flexibility in your career!
