Top Free and Affordable Project Management Tools for Copywriters

Most copywriters don’t have the luxury of working on just one project at a time, so they have to be able to juggle multiple assignments. This is difficult for even the most seasoned writers, but a project management tool can make a huge difference in a copywriter’s organization, time management, and content output.

Benefits of Project Management for Copywriters

In the shortest of terms, project management software (sometimes referred to as a content management system or CMS) is a tool that streamlines the planning, initiation, execution, completion, and review of all your various tasks and projects. On your own, you’d normally have to keep things like deadlines, client notes, ideas, pitches, and other copywriting mainstays straight. But a project management tool effectively consolidates those processes and data into a single platform.

Needless to say, a copywriter has much to grain from selecting a project management tool. But with so many options available, how do you choose the right tool?

Top Project Management Tools for Copywriters

When choosing a project management tool to help your copywriting, consider what you need and what features you value most. But here are three of the strongest contenders when it comes to project management for copywriters.

Trello

Consistently a favorite by writers of all types, Trello rates highly by its diverse base of users. It is also frequently cited as one of the easiest project management platforms to use. This is likely due to the user-friendly card-based design and drag-and-drop user interface.

But don’t let its simplicity fool you. Trello is more robust than it looks. It offers you numerous options for attaching documents, files, notes, and other info to your individual cards. Plus, each card offers a chronological timeline of changes, making it easy to track progress. And let’s not forget that the platform easily supports multiple users. So, if you fancy recruiting yourself a protégé, it’ll be simple to add him or her to your existing “boards”—which is the platform’s term for a series of related cards—and begin delegating some of your many time-sensitive projects.

Asana

If you’re looking for a project management platform with some real oomph to it, Asana could be for you. Trello has a rather minimal card-based design. Asana is list-based while retaining the drag-and-drop user interface. This makes it great for busier copywriters who need to manage lots of tasks and projects—perhaps even dozens—simultaneously since more of your entries will fit on the screen at the same time.

Asana also gives you more granular controls and snapshots of your projects. For instance, if you have copywriters working for you, you can get very detailed when it comes to assigning either entire projects or bits and pieces of projects to specific users. Plus, Asana offers robust team communication options built right into the platform. This saves you from having to switch over to email or Slack anytime you need to message a teammate.

Evernote

Traditionally, Evernote is seen as more of a note-taking, information-collecting platform, but it’s much more than that. Having evolved and developed over the years, Evernote can now be used as a full-featured project management tool with relative ease.

Of course, information collection and organization is at the heart of Evernote, making it an ideal starting point for your project management needs. Similar to Trello’s boards, Evernote allows you to collect your “notes” into “notebooks” that you can designate for specific projects, specific clients, or any other way that might be helpful, which even includes grouping your notebooks together. With its numerous social media integrations, Evernote has emerged as a great project management tool for copywriters, particular ones who are already using the platform as a means of storing research and ideas for pitches.
